The ICT sector combines manufacturing and\u00a0<strong>service industries\u00a0<\/strong>whose products primarily perform or enable the function of information processing and\u00a0<strong>communication via electronic means<\/strong>, such as transmission and display.<\/p>\r\n<p>Over the past decade, ICT has helped create the most rapidly growing industry sectors, driven efficiency in government and business operations, and developed the essential building blocks of a knowledge-based economy.<\/p>\r\n<h2>About Information and Communication Technology<\/h2>\r\n<p>Information and communication technology (ICT) is a broad term that encompasses all\u00a0<strong>technical tools\u00a0<\/strong>needed to manage information and facilitate communication, such as computer and network hardware, communication middleware, and essential software.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Information:\u00a0<\/strong>It is knowledge derived from data\/ data placed within a context. It is a message that the sender intends to communicate to the\u00a0<strong>receiver<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>It is produced and stored by individual minds, or implicitly encoded and documented in organisational processes, services and systems.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Communication:<\/strong>\u00a0It is the process of information, usually via a common system of symbols. Communication can be\u00a0<strong>participatory<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>transactive<\/strong>, deliberate, or unintended; verbal or nonverbal.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>ICT:\u00a0<\/strong>Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is about the use of technology in information processing and communication.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Various technologies have been developed over the years in terms of information and communication such as telephone, radio, computer hardware and software,\u00a0local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), satellite etc.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Objectives of ICT:<\/strong>\u00a0To improve information access and make human-to-human, human-to-machine, and machine-to-machine (M2M) communication more efficient and convenient.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Types of Technologies in ICT<\/h2>\r\n<p>ICT engineers are creating a virtual world that offers new services and applications for daily life, combining traditional technologies like landline telephones and radio broadcasts with modern advancements like artificial intelligence and\u00a0<strong>robotics<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Cellular Network:\u00a0<\/strong>The creation of technology and the evolution of the mobile industry have been initiated by the\u00a0<strong>mobile industry\u00a0<\/strong>since the early 1970s.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Cellular networks have evolved through various generations from the first version of mobile connectivity 1G in the 1980s to the more recent\u00a05G Technology\u00a0(fifth generation).<\/li>\r\n\t<li>6G Technology\u00a0is the sixth generation of cellular networks, with truly\u00a0<strong>omnipresent wireless intelligence<\/strong>\u00a0expected to be available in the early 2030s.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Wi-Fi:\u00a0<\/strong>Wi-Fi\u00a0is a networking technology that uses radio waves to transmit data at high speeds over short distances. It enables\u00a0<strong>local area networks (LANs)<\/strong>\u00a0to function without cables and wiring.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Wi-Fi Direct<\/strong>\u00a0is a Wi-Fi version that allows devices to connect without the need for a\u00a0<strong>LAN<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>LiFi:\u00a0<\/strong>LiFi Technology\u00a0is a wireless optical networking technology that transmits data via\u00a0<strong>light-emitting diodes (<\/strong>LEDs<strong>)<\/strong>. It provides better bandwidth, efficiency, connectivity, and security than Wi-Fi.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Supercomputers:\u00a0<\/strong>Supercomputer\u00a0is a system with high-performance computing capability to execute computationally intensive tasks in different scientific fields such as\u00a0<strong>molecular modelling,\u00a0<\/strong>climate research, and\u00a0<strong>quantum mechanics<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Space Internet:<\/strong>\u00a0Space Internet\u00a0is an internet connection powered by satellites orbiting the Earth.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>For instance,\u00a0<strong>Starlink\u00a0<\/strong>(by SpaceX) is providing high-speed internet access anywhere on the planet using a\u00a0<strong>constellation\u00a0<\/strong>of thousands of satellites.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Near-field communication (NFC):<\/strong>\u00a0It is a\u00a0<strong>short-range wireless<\/strong>\u00a0connectivity technology that uses\u00a0<strong>electromagnetic radio fields\u00a0<\/strong>to communicate between two devices.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>NFC-enabled devices must be either physically touching or within a few centimetres of each other for data transfer to occur.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Radio Frequency Identification (RFID):\u00a0<\/strong>It refers to a wireless system that uses\u00a0<strong>radio waves\u00a0<\/strong>at several different frequencies to transfer data. It is comprised of two\u00a0<strong>components: tags and readers.<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The reader is a device with one or more antennas that emit radio waves and receive signals from the\u00a0<strong>RFID tag.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li>Tags, which communicate their identity and other information to nearby readers via radio waves, can be either passive or active.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Other Technologies in ICT:\u00a0<\/strong>The Internet, the Internet of Things,\u00a0<strong>metaverse<\/strong>,\u00a0virtual reality, and social media are also part of ICT, as are\u00a0cloud computing<strong>services<\/strong>, video conferencing and collaboration tools, and mobile communication networks.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Emerging or work-in-progress technologies, like\u00a0<strong>5G<\/strong>\/<strong>6G<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Web3<\/strong>, and quantum computing are also in the ICT universe.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Application of Information and Communication Technology<\/h2>\r\n<p>Information and communication technology are used in a wide range of fields, including education, agriculture, medicine, defence, and\u00a0<strong>e-governance<\/strong>. With the advances in technology,\u00a0<strong>computing infrastructure<\/strong>, and the need to automate and reduce cycle times, ICT plays a vital role.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Education:<\/strong>\u00a0ICTs can increase access to and improve the quality of education. Many types of ICTs are commonly used in education like open and distance learning (access to a large number of e-books, and e-journals) and\u00a0<strong>E-learning<\/strong>\u00a0which makes use of the internet,\u00a0<strong>LAN, WAN<\/strong>, partially or completely, for proper communication or interaction.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Agriculture:<\/strong>\u00a0ICT benefits agriculture by providing up-to-date information on issues such as new variety releases, new threats, weather forecasts, pricing control, warning alerts, and so on.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Medicine:\u00a0<\/strong>The use of ICT has helped to develop new cures and treatments for illnesses. Most diseases are detected by computerized equipment refers as\u00a0<strong>MRI,<\/strong>\u00a0CT scanners, and\u00a0<strong>ECG machines. E-channeling\u00a0<\/strong>also plays a vital role in medicine, e-channeling refers to channelling doctors over the internet.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Defence:<\/strong>\u00a0ICT has transformed the defence industry from producing smart weapons to\u00a0<strong>network-centric battlefield<\/strong>\u00a0management and from aftermath combat review to\u00a0<strong>real-time combat surveillance<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>E-governance:<\/strong>\u00a0It utilizes ICT for government services, information exchange, communication transactions, and integration of systems and services between government to citizens, businesses, employees, and others.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>E-Commerce:\u00a0<\/strong>It is a business model that enables the buying and selling of goods and services over the Internet.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>ICT in India<\/h2>\r\n<p>India's ICT sector is growing rapidly and contributing to the economy overall. The success is hard-earned via deploying multiple government initiatives, development of adequate digital infrastructure, bolstering policy, legal and regulatory framework, and fostering public-private partnerships, etc.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The<strong>\u00a0ICT sector<\/strong>\u00a0contributes to around\u00a0<strong>13% of the country's G<\/strong>D<strong>P<\/strong>. It intends to increase to<strong>\u00a0$1 trillion\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0<strong>20%<\/strong>\u00a0of projected GDP\u00a0<strong>\u00a0by 2025<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Regulatory Framework<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023:<\/strong>\u00a0The act seeks to protect Indian citizens'\u00a0<strong>privacy\u00a0<\/strong>and personal data in the context of a globally interconnected digital economy.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Telecommunications Bill:\u00a0<\/strong>Telecommunications Bill 2023\u00a0aims to consolidate and amend existing laws governing the provision, development, expansion, and operation of telecommunications services, telecom networks, and infrastructure, as well as spectrum allocation.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>It consolidates three separate acts that govern the telecommunications sector \u2014 the\u00a0<strong>Indian Telegraph Act of 1885<\/strong>, the\u00a0<strong>Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1933<\/strong>, and The\u00a0<strong>Telegraph Wires, (Unlawful Protection) Act of 1950<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>IT Amendment Rules, 2023:\u00a0<\/strong>It gives the union government the authority to remove any online content related to its business that it considers false or misleading.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The amendment contains a provision that repeals the legal protection granted to social media platforms and intermediaries under Section 79 of the\u00a0<strong>Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000<\/strong>, if they fail to comply with the union government's orders.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Government Initiatives to Accelerate ICT<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Digital India Program:<\/strong>\u00a0The Government of India's<strong>\u00a0flagship programme<\/strong>, launched in\u00a0<strong>2015\u00a0<\/strong>to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The policy aimed to achieve\u00a0<strong>three vision areas<\/strong>: infrastructure as a utility for all citizens, governance, and services on demand, and digital empowerment through nine 'pillars' or focus areas.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>National Policy on Electronics<\/strong>: It establishes a strategic framework for India\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM)<\/strong>\u00a0sector.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The policy actively promotes a comprehensive startup ecosystem, with a focus on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence,\u00a0<strong>5G<\/strong>,\u00a0IoT, machine learning, robotics, optics, and more.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>National Broadband Mission:<\/strong>\u00a0It enables fast-track growth of digital communications infrastructure, bridges the\u00a0<strong>digital divide<\/strong>\u00a0for digital empowerment and inclusion, and provides affordable and\u00a0<strong>universal access\u00a0<\/strong>to broadband for all.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT):<\/strong>\u00a0It aims to make high-quality content available to all learners in the country at no cost. The various initiatives are implemented under this program:\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>SWAYAM:\u00a0<\/strong>The 'Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds' (SWAYAM) is an integrated platform that provides online courses from the ninth to the twelfth grades to the postgraduate level.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>National Digital Library (NDL):\u00a0<\/strong>To create a framework for a virtual repository of learning resources that include a single-window search facility.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Challenges Associated with ICT in India<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Digital divide:\u00a0<\/strong>There exists a grave digital divide in India wherein gaps exist in the usage of the internet and access to digital infrastructure.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>According to the \u2018<strong>India Inequality Report 2022: Digital Divide\u2019 by Oxfam<\/strong>, only 38% of households are digitally literate; additionally, only 31% of the rural population uses the internet as compared to 67% of the urban population.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Privacy concern:<\/strong>\u00a0Recent advances in information technology threaten privacy and have reduced the amount of control over personal data and open up the possibility of a range of negative consequences as a result of access to personal data.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Cybersecurity threats:\u00a0<\/strong>With advancements in ICT<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>cybersecurity threats also continue to grow and evolve in frequency, vector, and complexity.
