It comprises the physical and digital assets that enable the efficient movement of people, goods, services, and information, including roads, railways, ports, airports, power networks, digital identity systems, and payment platforms.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the past decade, <\/span><b>India's infrastructure sector<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has witnessed unprecedented expansion through large-scale investments in transport, logistics and urban development. Flagship initiatives such as the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), PM Gati Shakti, Bharatmala, Sagarmala, and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) have strengthened multimodal connectivity and improved ease of doing business. <\/span><b>The World Bank<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has identified India among the top five countries globally for infrastructure-related job creation, economic growth and improving quality of life.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Infrastructure Types<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Infrastructure in India can be broadly categorised into Physical, Urban, and Digital infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Physical Infrastructure (Transport &amp; Logistics)<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It facilitates the seamless movement of goods, people, and services. Through initiatives such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/national-infrastructure-pipeline\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP)<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, and the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP), India is strengthening multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><b>Roads &amp; Highways<\/b>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><b>Bharatmala Pariyojana:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The <\/span><b>National Highways network<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has expanded significantly from <\/span><b>91,287 km in 2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><b>1,46,572 km as of\u00a0 March 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, substantially improving road connectivity and freight movement across India.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The length of <\/span><b>access-controlled expressways and high-speed corridors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has increased from <\/span><b>93 km to 2,636 km<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, enabling faster, safer, and more efficient transportation.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> integrates highways with <\/span><b>railways, ports, airports, logistics parks, and other transport networks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> through a GIS-based digital platform, ensuring seamless multimodal connectivity and coordinated planning.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under <\/span><b>the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) 2.0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the <\/span><b>highways sector accounts for the largest share (26%) of asset monetisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, generating resources for the development of new transport infrastructure and enhancing private sector participation.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Railways: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India has introduced 164 Vande Bharat trains as of Dec. 2025 and electrified 46,900 km of railway lines since 2014.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors are over 96% operational, improving freight efficiency.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Railway projects are coordinated under PM Gati Shakti, while operational assets are monetised through the National Monetisation Pipeline.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Aviation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/udan-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>UDAN Scheme<\/strong><\/a>, 95 regional airports have been operationalised, benefiting over 1.68 crore passengers as of July 2026.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Operational airports increased from <\/span><b>74 in 2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><b>165 in July 2026.<\/b><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DigiYatra has been implemented across 38 airports to provide over 10 crore seamless journeys.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Ports &amp; Waterways: <\/b><b>Major ports\u2019 cargo handling capacity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> nearly doubled from <\/span><b>873 MMTPA in 2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><b>1,728 MMTPA in 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><b>Vessel turnaround time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> improved from <\/span><b>94 hours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><b>48.8 hours in 2025-26<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inland waterway cargo has increased by 710% under the Sagarmala Programme.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>National waterways<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> increased from <\/span><b>5 in 2014 to 111 in 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, of which <\/span><b>32 are operational<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>India became the world's No. 1 ship-recycling nation in 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with its global share rising from 30.1% (2024) to <\/span><b>35.4% (2025),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> recycling <\/span><b>2.99 million gross tonnes (GT)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, up nearly 60% from 1.86 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">million GT in 2024.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Port connectivity projects are integrated through PM Gati Shakti.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>Sagarmala Programme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> strengthened port-led development, coastal connectivity, and logistics integration.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Cross-cutting Planning: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The NIP covers around 13,000 projects with an estimated investment of \u20b9185 lakh crore across 33 sectors.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><b>PRAGATI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reviewed <\/span><b>382 projects<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> worth over <\/span><b>\u20b985 lakh crore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and resolved <\/span><b>2,958 issues<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over <\/span><b>4,220 industrial parks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are mapped on the <\/span><b>India Industrial Land Bank (IILB)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>272 plug-and-play industrial parks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are operational across the country.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>BHAVYA <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">scheme<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was approved in March 2026 to develop <\/span><b>100 new plug-and-play industrial parks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>BHAVYA Rasayan Scheme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was approved on 24 July 2026, with an outlay of <\/span><b>\u20b93,030 crore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The scheme will be implemented over five years, from FY2026\u201327 to FY2030\u201331.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>7 Pradhan Mantri MITRA Parks <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have been proposed to strengthen the manufacturing ecosystem.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Around 20% of NIP projects have been completed, while nearly 45% are under implementation.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Bridges and Tunnels:<\/b><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><b>Chenab Bridge (2025):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> World's highest railway arch bridge, strengthening Jammu\u2013Srinagar connectivity.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Other important bridges and tunnels include <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anji Khad Bridge (2025), Pamban Bridge (2025), Z-Morh\/Sonamarg Tunnel (2025), Sudarshan Setu (2024), Atal Tunnel (2020), Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee Tunnel (2017), etc.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Metro: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The metro network expanded from <\/span><b>248 km in 2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to over <\/span><b>1,155 km in 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cities with metro connectivity increased from <\/span><b>5 to 26<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, while daily ridership crossed <\/span><b>1.15 crore passengers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kolkata operationalised<\/span><b> India\u2019s first underwater metro tunnel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in 2024.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kochi operationalised <\/span><b>India\u2019s first Water Metro <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">system, with the first boat launched in December 2021.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Urban Infrastructure<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It aims to create sustainable, resilient, and economically vibrant cities by improving water supply, sanitation, mobility, and smart governance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><b>AMRUT &amp; AMRUT 2.0: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under <\/span><b>AMRUT and AMRUT 2.0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, projects worth about <\/span><b>\u20b92.79 lakh crore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have been sanctioned since 2015.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The mission focuses on water security and universal sewerage coverage.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It has provided 2.03 crore tap water connections and 1.50 crore sewer connections.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The programme reduces carbon emissions by nearly 46 lakh tonnes annually.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Smart Cities Mission: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under the Smart Cities Mission, a total of <\/span><b>7,790 projects (95% of the total)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> worth <\/span><b>\u20b91,56,257 crore worth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have been completed as of March 2026.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All 100 Smart Cities now have AI- and IoT-enabled Integrated Command and Control Centres.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>SWAMIH Fund <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">launched in 2019 delivered over <\/span><b>63,000 homes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, benefiting around <\/span><b>2.52 lakh people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as of June 2026.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India has emerged as a global leader in DPI by leveraging the JAM Trinity (Jan Dhan\u2013Aadhaar\u2013Mobile) and expanding digital connectivity through flagship initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><b>Digital Connectivity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BharatNet has connected nearly 2.18 lakh Gram Panchayats (about 97% of the target) with over 7 lakh km of optical fibre. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India has 106.58 crore broadband subscribers, while 5G services cover 99.9% of districts through 4.74 lakh towers.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Digital Identity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More than 144 crore Aadhaar numbers have been generated. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aadhaar enabled over 2,707 crore authentications during 2024\u201325.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Digital Economy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UPI processed 21.7 billion transactions worth \u20b928.33 lakh crore in January 2026, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ONDC has onboarded over 1.16 lakh retail sellers, promoting open digital commerce.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Citizen Services: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DigiLocker serves 67.63 crore users.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Platforms such as UMANG and PFMS have strengthened digital governance.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PFMS has generated savings of over \u20b94.31 lakh crore by eliminating fake beneficiaries.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Digital Health: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">eSanjeevani has provided teleconsultation services to 45.42 crore patients.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Platforms such as CoWIN have transformed digital health delivery.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Emerging Digital Technologies: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The India Semiconductor Mission has approved 12 semiconductor projects worth \u20b91.64 lakh crore, while ISM 2.0 has been launched to strengthen indigenous semiconductor capabilities.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The IndiaAI Mission, with an outlay of \u20b910,371.92 crore, has expanded national AI compute capacity beyond 45,000 GPUs.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme supports 24 semiconductor startups, has attracted \u20b9430 crore in venture capital, and enabled the fabrication of 20 indigenous chips.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Digital India Mission is now transitioning towards AI, semiconductors, and frontier technologies after completing 11 years.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Social Infrastructure<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><b>Social infrastructure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> refers to the physical and institutional facilities that support <\/span><b>human development, quality of life and social well-being<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, particularly in health, education and housing. Unlike economic infrastructure such as roads, ports and power, it primarily strengthens <\/span><b>human capital, social equity and inclusive growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Health Infrastructure<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India has increasingly focused on strengthening the health sector to improve primary healthcare, critical-care capacity and pandemic preparedness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>PM-ABHIM:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The <\/span><b>Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was launched on <\/span><b>25 October 2021<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with a total outlay of <\/span><b>\u20b964,180 crore for FY2021-22 to FY2025-26<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Primary Healthcare:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Under its Centrally Sponsored component, the scheme provides for the construction of <\/span><b>17,788 building-less Sub-Centres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Urban Health Infrastructure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The scheme also envisages <\/span><b>11,024 Urban AAMs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in urban areas, particularly focusing on slums and slum-like settlements.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>State-Level Infrastructure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> As of July 2025, <\/span><b>\u20b933,081.82 crore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> had been approved for States and UTs for strengthening health infrastructure under PM-ABHIM.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Critical Care:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The mission envisaged establishing <\/span><b>35,000 critical-care beds across 600 districts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, along with referral facilities in <\/span><b>125 districts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, to improve preparedness for health emergencies.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Education Infrastructure<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is critical for improving learning outcomes, employability, innovation and the quality of India's human capital.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Launched on <\/span><b>5 September 2022<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with an outlay of about <\/span><b>\u20b927,360 crore for 2022\u201323 to 2026\u201327<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It aims to upgrade selected existing government schools into <\/span><b>model schools aligned with NEP 2020<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, equipped with smart classrooms, laboratories, libraries, sports and vocational facilities.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Samagra Shiksha:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> It serves as the umbrella scheme for school education, supporting <\/span>school &amp;
