Railway infrastructure in India is undergoing a major transformation through investments in network expansion, electrification, Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs), station redevelopment and high-speed rail. Landmark projects such as the Chenab Bridge, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), the Bairabi\u2013Sairang line and the New Pamban Bridge demonstrate India\u2019s growing engineering capabilities and connectivity in challenging terrains.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With the world's fourth-largest railway network and now the second-largest rail freight carrier, Indian Railways sits at an extraordinary inflection point: modernising railway infrastructure at pace while still carrying the weight of decades of under-investment, structural complexity and institutional inertia.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Railway Infrastructure Overview<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indian Railways is one of the world's largest railway networks and serves as the backbone of India's <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/infrastructure\/\" target=\"_blank\">infrastructure<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0system, especially the transport system, facilitating passenger mobility, freight movement, and regional integration. Over the last decade, the sector has witnessed significant investments in capacity expansion, electrification, modernisation, and connectivity projects.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Extensive Network:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Indian Railways operates over<\/span><b> 68,000 route km <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of track, connects <\/span><b>7,000+ <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">stations, and laid <\/span><b>34,428 route km<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of new track between 2014 and 2025.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Record Capital Investment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Railway capital expenditure reached \u20b92.65 lakh crore in FY2025-26, with over 35,000 km of new lines and 46,000 km of electrification completed in the last decade.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Railway Infrastructure Significance\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indian Railways is not merely a transport system but a key driver of economic growth, social inclusion, sustainability, and national integration. Through freight efficiency, affordable mobility, safety improvements, and strategic connectivity, it plays a vital role in India's development journey.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Freight and Economic Competitiveness:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Indian railway infrastructure has emerged as the world's second-largest rail freight carrier, transporting <\/span><b>over 1.6 billion tonnes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of freight and supporting industrial growth while reducing logistics costs.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Eastern and Western DFCs have significantly increased freight train speeds, decongested passenger routes, and enhanced multimodal logistics through PM Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Affordable and Inclusive Mobility: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carrying around <\/span><b>23 million passengers daily,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Indian Railways provides affordable transport and is redeveloping 1,337 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme as of December 2025.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Improved Safety Standards:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Consequential train accidents declined from 135 in 2014\u201315 to 14 during 2025\u201326 up to February 2026, supported by higher safety investments, deployment of CCTV systems, fog safety devices, and modern signalling infrastructure.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Green and Sustainable Transport:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Near-complete electrification, increasing renewable energy use, and the introduction of hydrogen-powered locomotive trials are helping Railways move towards net-zero emissions.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Digital Transformation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Initiatives such as the <\/span><b>RailOne App<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, station Wi-Fi, digital ticketing, and anti-touting measures have improved passenger convenience and service delivery.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Railway Infrastructure Projects under Development<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India is expanding its railway infrastructure to improve <\/span><b>freight efficiency, passenger mobility, regional connectivity and integration with PM GatiShakti<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>PM GatiShakti Projects: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the last four years, i.e., FY 2022-23, 2023-24, 2024-25 and FY 2025-26, 300 projects (51 New Line, 17 Gauge Conversion and 232 Doubling) of total length 13,808 km have been sanctioned across Indian Railways under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The <\/span><b>Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">together cover <\/span><b>2,843 route-km<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with the network now substantially\/fully commissioned and operational. The corridors aim to increase freight capacity, reduce transit time and decongest passenger routes.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>New Dedicated Freight Corridors:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> DPRs for the proposed <\/span><b>East Coast, East-West and North-South DFCs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are under examination.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Dankuni\u2013Surat DFC:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Announced in the Union Budget 2026-27, the approximately 2,100-km corridor will pass through West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Gujarat, with pre-construction activities being fast-tracked.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Mumbai\u2013Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The <\/span><b>508-km bullet-train corridor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is being developed through Maharashtra, Gujarat and Dadra &amp; Nagar Haveli. Land acquisition and utility shifting have been completed, while physical progress has crossed <\/span><b>61%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; the first service is targeted for <\/span><b>August 2027<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Seven New High-Speed Rail Corridors: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Union Budget 2026-27 announced Mumbai\u2013Pune, Pune\u2013Hyderabad, Hyderabad\u2013Bengaluru, Hyderabad\u2013Chennai, Chennai\u2013Bengaluru, Delhi\u2013Varanasi and Varanasi\u2013Siliguri high-speed rail corridors.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Udhampur\u2013Srinagar\u2013Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The <\/span><b>272-km Himalayan rail project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, comprising 36 major tunnels and 943 bridges, was completed and dedicated in 2025, including the <\/span><b>Chenab Rail Bridge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the world's highest railway arch bridge.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Northeast Connectivity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The <\/span><b>Bairabi\u2013Sairang railway line<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was inaugurated in 2025, extending railway connectivity deeper into the Northeast and strengthening regional integration.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Namo Bharat\/RRTS:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> India's first <\/span><b>Regional Rapid Transit System<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> operates at speeds of up to <\/span><b>160 km\/h<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, providing faster regional connectivity between Delhi and Meerut.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Railway Infrastructure Modernisation<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Railway infrastructure modernisation focuses on <\/span><b>electrification, track capacity, station modernisation, rolling stock, signalling and safety<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, alongside increased capital expenditure.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Railway Electrification:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Around 99.6% of the Broad Gauge network has been electrified, with 14 Railway Zones and 25 States\/UTs achieving 100% electrification.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Track Expansion &amp;
