Make in India 2.0 expanded the initiative to 27 priority sectors, covering electronics, defence, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and renewable energy. It seeks to create a competitive business environment by simplifying regulations, improving infrastructure, attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and promoting ease of doing business.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By strengthening domestic manufacturing, the initiative aims to generate employment, enhance technological capabilities, integrate Indian firms into Global Value Chains (GVCs), and strengthen domestic supply chains. Thus, Make in India promotes industrial competitiveness, reduces critical import dependence, and supports the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make in India Objectives<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In order to boost industrial growth and position India as a top global manufacturing location, the Make in India project was started. <\/span><b>Objectives of Make in India are:<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make India a global centre for investment and industry.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boost the manufacturing sector's GDP contribution.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Create a lot of job opportunities.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Draw in both foreign and domestic direct investment.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Encourage entrepreneurship, creativity, and technology development.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bolster India's ability to compete in exports.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Build top-notch industrial infrastructure.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lessen reliance on imports and promote Atmanirbhar Bharat.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make in India Features and Pillars<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With an emphasis on developing a competitive manufacturing ecosystem, the programme is based on four fundamental elements.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>New Processes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The government implemented several measures to make conducting business easier, including streamlining rules, digitising approvals, lowering the burden of compliance, and improving the efficiency and transparency of corporate processes.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>New Infrastructure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Modern industrial corridors, smart cities, logistical infrastructure, and innovation ecosystems are the initiative's main goals. Issues such as infrastructure bottlenecks, skill shortages, regulatory complexities and external economic uncertainties continue to influence investment decisions and industrial competitiveness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Infrastructure Deficits:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Production costs are raised by poor industrial infrastructure, transportation connectivity, and logistics.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Low Manufacturing Value Addition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India has expanded manufacturing capacity in several sectors, but <\/span><b>domestic value addition remains relatively low<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in areas such as electronics.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under the revised national accounts series, manufacturing accounted for 14.8% of total GVA in 2025\u201326.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Exorbitant Logistics Expenses:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Compared to many rival manufacturing economies, logistics costs are still comparatively higher.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The latest DPIIT-NCAER assessment estimates India\u2019s logistics costs at 7.97% of GDP in 2023\u201324. However, localised inefficiencies and structural bottlenecks continue to raise operational costs for manufacturers compared with major manufacturing economies.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Skill Gaps: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Workers with the necessary skills are still in limited supply in modern industrial industries.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Limited R&amp;D and Technology Depth:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> India's manufacturing sector faces gaps in research and development, advanced technologies and indigenous innovation.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">R&amp;D expenditure as a percentage of the country\u2019s <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/gross-domestic-product-gdp\/\" target=\"_blank\">GDP<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (gross domestic product) is just 0.64%.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Complicated Labour and Land Regulations:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Regulatory obstacles and drawn-out approval procedures hinder industrial growth.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Reliance on Imported Parts:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Many industries still rely significantly on foreign inputs, especially semiconductors and electronics.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>MSME Limitations:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Small manufacturers' ability to compete is impacted by their limited access to global markets, technology, and financing.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Uncertainty in the World Economy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Manufacturing investment decisions are still influenced by supply chain disruptions and geopolitical concerns.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make in India Way Forward<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Make in India project must continue to expand through policy changes, technology advancements, and infrastructure development if it is to realise its goal of turning India into a worldwide manufacturing hub.
