Supported by infrastructure development, policy reforms, rising investment, and growing domestic demand, the industrial sector in India has emerged as a key pillar of economic growth.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the first half of FY 2025\u201326, industrial GVA grew by 7.0% in real terms, demonstrating resilience despite global supply-chain disruptions, inflationary pressures, and geopolitical uncertainties. India is also seeking deeper integration into Global Value Chains (GVCs) by shifting from cost-based manufacturing towards technology-driven and value-added production. Strengthening manufacturing, research and development, infrastructure, logistics, and MSMEs will remain crucial for enhancing industrial competitiveness and achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Industrial Sector Types<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The industrial sector in India is highly diversified, encompassing a wide range of industries that contribute to economic growth, employment generation, infrastructure development, and exports. Each category of industrial sector plays a distinct role in the economy, from extracting natural resources and manufacturing finished goods to building infrastructure and providing essential utility services.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Manufacturing Sector: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This sector makes up the majority of industrial output and transforms raw resources into completed items.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Examples include steel, cement, cars, electronics, pharmaceuticals, textiles, chemicals, and food processing.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Automation, digitalisation, robotics, and cutting-edge technologies like <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\">artificial intelligence<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are becoming more and more prevalent in manufacturing.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>The Mining Sector: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Natural resources such as iron ore and coal, limestone, bauxite, copper, and manganese are extracted by mining businesses.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The raw materials needed for infrastructure development and production come from mining.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>The Construction Sector:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> It comprises roads, railroads, airports, housing, smart cities, and industrial parks.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It increases demand for steel, cement, and machinery and is one of India's biggest employers.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Gas, Electricity, and Utility Services: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Industrial output is supported by a stable energy infrastructure. Industrial productivity has increased dramatically as a result of investments in power distribution, transmission networks, and renewable energy.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Industrial Sector Overview<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The industrial sector includes mining and quarrying, manufacturing, electricity, gas, water supply and construction.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It links agriculture and services by processing raw materials, generating employment and boosting exports.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India's growing domestic market, skilled workforce, improving\u00a0<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/infrastructure\/\" target=\"_blank\">infrastructure<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, policy reforms and digital ecosystem make it an attractive manufacturing destination.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Industrial Sector Performance for Fiscal Year 2025\u20132026<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India's industrial sector saw continued growth during FY 2025\u20132026, despite poor global manufacturing circumstances. <\/span><b>As stated by the Economic Survey:<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the first half of FY 2025\u20132026, industry Gross Value Added (GVA) increased by 7.0%, compared with 5.9% in FY 2024\u20132025.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Q1 and Q2, manufacturing GVA grew by 7.72% and 9.13%, respectively, indicating a resurgence of industrial vigour.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite the standstill in several advanced countries, India continued to rank among the world's fastest-growing industrial economies, as per the World Bank.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29169 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiramias.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp\/upsc-exam\/2026\/09\/03120321\/Industrial-Sector.png\" alt=\"Industrial Sector\" width=\"815\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vajiramias.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp\/upsc-exam\/2026\/09\/03120321\/Industrial-Sector.png 1642w, https:\/\/vajiramias.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp\/upsc-exam\/2026\/09\/03120321\/Industrial-Sector-768x448.png 768w, https:\/\/vajiramias.sgp1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/wp\/upsc-exam\/2026\/09\/03120321\/Industrial-Sector-1536x896.png 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 815px) 100vw, 815px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India's Transition to High-Tech Manufacturing<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The growing proportion of high-value manufacturing is one of the largest structural shifts in India's industrial sector.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Currently, 46.3% of India's manufacturing value addition comes from medium- and high-technology businesses, indicating a steady shift toward more advanced production techniques.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This change has been expedited by government support for semiconductors, electronics, pharmaceuticals, transportation equipment, and speciality chemicals.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This change is crucial because, in addition to low manufacturing costs, future global competitiveness will rely on innovation, technological leadership, and integration into Global Value Chains (GVCs).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India's increasing industrial strength was highlighted by its Competitive Industrial Performance (CIP) ranking, which rose from 40th in 2022 to 37th in 2023.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Industrial Sector Importance<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The industrial sector is a key driver of India's growth, employment, exports and infrastructure, while creating strong linkages with <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/agriculture-notes\/\" target=\"_blank\">agriculture<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and services across the economy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Boosts Economic Growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Industry GVA grew 7.0% in real terms in H1 FY2025\u201326, with manufacturing GVA growing 7.72% in Q1 and 9.13% in Q2.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Generates Employment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The organised manufacturing sector employed about 1.96 crore persons in 2023\u201324, with employment rising 5.92% during the year. It added around 57 lakh jobs over 2014\u201315 to 2023\u201324.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Promotes Exports:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> India accounted for about 1.8% of global merchandise exports and 2.9% of global manufacturing GVA in 2024, highlighting substantial scope for expanding its global manufacturing presence.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Drives Technological Innovation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Medium- and high-technology industries accounted for 46.3% of India's manufacturing value added, reflecting increasing movement towards technology-intensive production.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Supports Infrastructure Development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Industrial growth creates demand for roads, railways, ports, power and industrial corridors. India's high-speed road corridors increased from 550 km in FY2014 to 5,364 km by December 2025.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Strengthens Supply Chains<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Initiatives such as PLI have expanded domestic production and supplier networks. Across 14 sectors, PLI has attracted over \u20b92 lakh crore investment, generating more than \u20b918.7 lakh crore incremental production\/sales by September 2025.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Enhances Global Competitiveness:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Integration with global value chains enables Indian firms to access international markets, technology and production networks.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, India's manufacturing share remains only 2.9% of global manufacturing GVA, indicating considerable room for expansion.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Promotes Regional Development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Industrial clusters and corridors help spread investment beyond traditional centres.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, industrial activity remains largely concentrated in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu; together, they accounted for about 43% of industrial GSVA in FY2022\u201323.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Creates a Multiplier Effect<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Industrial expansion generates demand for transport, logistics, finance, construction, energy and business services, creating linkages across the economy.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Economic Survey notes that dynamic industrial and service sectors can also absorb surplus agricultural labour and generate additional demand for farm output.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Industrial Sector Government Initiatives<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India\u2019s industrial sector is driving economic growth through policy reforms, rising investment, infrastructure expansion and manufacturing initiatives aimed at generating jobs, boosting exports and enhancing global competitiveness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Programme<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India's main industrial strategy, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, aims to increase domestic manufacturing and draw in foreign investment.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">14 strategic sectors are covered under the programme, including pharmaceuticals, electronics and medical devices, telecom, food processing, cars, textiles, solar PV modules, speciality steel and white goods.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Major Achievements: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Investments of \u20b92.40 lakh crore.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">About \u20b915.2 lakh crore in exports.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Around 14.15 lakh jobs, including direct and indirect.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Manufacturing Mission (NMM)<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The National Manufacturing Mission, which was included in the Union Budget 2025\u20132026, offers a long-term industrial restructuring strategy.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Its main goals for 2035 are as follows: Raising the GDP share of manufacturing from 12.9% to 25%, generating 143 million jobs, and increasing exports of goods to USD 1.2 trillion.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Three strategic categories are identified by the mission<\/b>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scale: Pharmaceuticals and automobiles.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fix and Transform: Capital goods and electronics.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seed: Electric cars and semiconductors.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In order to lower logistical costs and boost industrial efficiency, <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/pm-gati-shakti\/\" target=\"_blank\">PM Gati Semiconductor Mission<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The government started the India Semiconductor Mission to lessen reliance on imported putting more emphasis on industrial growth fuelled by research.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Significant initiatives include the <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) to improve cooperation in research.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Research, Development &amp; Innovation (RDI) Fund will invest \u20b91 lakh crore over six years to encourage private sector R&amp;D and deep-tech innovation.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Industrial Sector Sector-wise Progress<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India's industrial sector revolution is due to the robust performance of a number of key manufacturing sectors. These industries have been bolstered by government policy backing, growing domestic demand, technical innovation, and infrastructure investments, making India a more competitive manufacturing destination.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Steel Industry<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The foundation of India's manufacturing and infrastructure ecosystem is the steel sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India is currently the second-largest producer of crude steel in the world because of robust demand from the engineering, building, infrastructure, railway, and automotive sectors.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Important Highlights: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Production of crude steel rose from 103.54 million tonnes in FY21 to 152.18 million tonnes in FY25.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">146.69 million tonnes of finished steel were produced.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Due to strong domestic demand, steel consumption rose to 152.13 million tonnes.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Crude steel output increased by 11.7% and finished steel production by 10.8% between April and October of FY26.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Cement Sector<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With an established production capacity of about 690 million tonnes, India is the world's <\/span><b>second-largest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> manufacturer of cement as of early 2026.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Infrastructure development, housing, roads, railroads, industrial corridors, and urbanisation are all supported by the industry.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Present Situation: In FY25, cement production was over 453 million tonnes.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India consumes only 290 kg of cement per person as per the Economic Survey 2025-26, which is far less than the global average and suggests substantial room for future expansion.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MSMEs<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MSMEs, or micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, continue to be essential to India's economic ecosystem.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>MSMEs' contribution as per the Economic Survey 2025-26: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">35.4% of manufacturing output, 48.58% of exports, and roughly 31.1% of GDP.<\/span>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Employment of more than 32 crore individuals.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over 7.4 crore registered businesses.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Electronics Sector<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India's fastest-growing manufacturing sector and a significant contributor to exports is the electronics industry.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India used to be a net importer of electronics, but it is now a major hub for global production.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Major Achievements: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In FY25, electronics became India's third-largest export sector.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the first half of FY26, exports of electronics totalled USD 22.2 billion.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India's electronics production reached \u20b911.3 lakh crore in FY2024\u201325, while electronics exports reached \u20b93.27 lakh crore.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Production of mobile phones rose from \u20b918,000 crore in FY15 to \u20b95.45 lakh crore in FY25, a roughly 30-fold rise.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India is currently the<\/span><b> world's second-largest producer of mobile phones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with more than 300 production facilities.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Automobile Sector<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India is now recognised as the biggest market for two- and three-wheelers worldwide and the third-biggest car market in the world.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li><b>Major Achievements<\/b><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over 30 million people are employed, both directly and indirectly.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The automotive industry accounts for around 15% of GST collections.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In FY25, more than 5.3 million vehicles were exported.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over the last ten years, production has grown by almost 33%.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pharmaceutical Sector<\/span><\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">India is considered the \u201cPharmacy of the World\".
