Its early settlements provided the foundation for commercial expansion, while Plassey and Buxar marked its transition to political power.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>British East India Company in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> subsequently expanded through wars, alliances and annexations, while its revenue, administrative, judicial and economic policies strengthened its control. Growing British parliamentary intervention, financial difficulties and opposition to Company rule weakened its position. The Revolt of 1857 brought Company rule to an end, with power transferred to the British Crown in 1858; the Company was formally dissolved in 1874.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">British East India Company History<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><b>The British East India Company in India <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was established in 1600 as an English trading company and gradually expanded its presence in India. Over the 17th and 18th centuries, it moved from commercial activities towards political and territorial control, eventually becoming the principal instrument of British rule in India.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Foundation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Company was founded by English merchants in London and received a Royal Charter granting it a monopoly over English trade with the East Indies.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Establishment in India:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Company gradually established trading settlements along the Indian coast, creating the commercial base from which it later expanded its influence.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Growing Political Influence:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> As the Company's commercial interests expanded, it increasingly became involved in Indian political affairs. The acquisition of Bombay strengthened its strategic and commercial position.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Rise amid Political Rivalries:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> During the 18th century, the weakening of Mughal authority and rivalry among European powers created opportunities for the Company to expand its political and military influence.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Plassey and Buxar:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/battle-of-plassey\/\" target=\"_blank\">Battle of Plassey<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (1757) marked a decisive turning point in the Company's rise to political power in Bengal. Its victory at the Battle of Buxar (1764) further consolidated its position and strengthened its authority in eastern India.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Expansion of Company Rule:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> After establishing its power in Bengal, the Company progressively extended its authority into other parts of India through military campaigns, political alliances and territorial expansion.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Increasing British Government Control:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> As the Company's territorial and administrative responsibilities grew, the British Parliament increasingly intervened in its affairs, gradually limiting its independent authority.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>End of Company Rule:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Revolt of 1857 became the decisive crisis for Company rule. In 1858, authority over the Company's Indian territories was transferred to the British Crown, ending Company rule and beginning direct Crown rule. The Company itself was formally dissolved in 1874.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">British East India Company First Factory<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 1605, the British East India Company opened its first temporary factory in Masulipatnam to begin trading with India. Later, it established its first permanent factory in Surat in 1613, with permission from Mughal Emperor Jahangir. This marked the official commencement of the British commercial presence in India, laying the groundwork for future colonial growth.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">British East India Company Early Settlements<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><b>The British East India Company in India <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">gradually established trading settlements along the Indian coast to secure access to markets and commodities. These settlements developed into important commercial, strategic and administrative centres and later became the foundations of British territorial expansion.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Surat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Company established its important trading presence at Surat in the early 17th century after securing trading privileges from the Mughal authorities. Surat became a major centre of the Company's early trade on the western coast.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Madras:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In 1639, the Company acquired the site of Madras (present-day Chennai) and established Fort St George. It developed into an important centre of Company trade on the southeastern coast.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Bombay:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Bombay was transferred to the English Crown in 1661 as part of the marriage settlement of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza and was subsequently transferred to the East India Company in 1668. It became an important commercial and strategic centre on the western coast.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Calcutta:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Company established its settlement at Calcutta (present-day Kolkata) in 1690 under Job Charnock. It later developed into the principal centre of the Company's commercial and political power in Bengal.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Presidency Centres:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> These settlements gradually developed into the three major Presidencies-Bengal, Madras, and Bombay.
