However, concerns relating to biometric fraud, authentication failures, cybersecurity, infrastructure gaps and privacy highlight the need for stronger safeguards and user protection.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AEPS Background<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><b>The 'AEPS' full form is \u2018<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/aadhaar\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Aadhaar<\/b><\/a><b> Enabled Payment System',<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which is a bank-led digital payment model developed by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/national-payments-corporation-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to extend basic banking services to every corner of the country using Aadhaar-based authentication.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>RBI-Led Institutional Framework:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> RBI constituted Working Groups on MicroATM Standards and Aadhaar-based transaction infrastructure with members from the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/reserve-bank-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reserve Bank of India<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, UIDAI, National Payments Corporation of India, and the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology to accelerate financial inclusion through interoperable Aadhaar-enabled banking systems.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Development of AEPS Infrastructure:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Working Groups submitted recommendations to RBI and successfully demonstrated a lab-level PoC integrating UIDAI authentication and encryption standards, laying the foundation for a secure and standardised Aadhaar-Enabled Payment System.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Bank-Led Interoperable Banking Model:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> AEPS was designed as a simple interoperable banking platform enabling services like cash withdrawal, deposit, fund transfer, balance inquiry, and mini statement using only Aadhaar number, bank name, biometrics, and transaction type through NPCI\u2019s central switching system.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/financial-inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Financial Inclusion<\/b><\/a><b> &amp; DBT Impact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> AEPS expanded rapidly after demonetisation in 2016 and became a major financial inclusion tool, supporting Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT), welfare schemes, and serving over 37 crore users in 2023 while helping eliminate fake beneficiaries.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AEPS Objectives<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><b>AEPS <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was conceived with a clear and purposeful mandate to make banking accessible, interoperable, and inclusive for every Indian, regardless of geography or socio-economic status.
