

{"id":3681,"date":"2026-01-04T22:22:29","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T16:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/?p=3681"},"modified":"2026-01-05T11:38:26","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T06:08:26","slug":"5g-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/5g-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"5G Technology &#8211; Features, Advantages, and Limitations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>5G\u00a0<\/strong>is the\u00a0<strong>fifth generation<\/strong>\u00a0of cellular mobile communications with revolutionary services, which succeeds the 4G, 3G, and 2G (GMS) systems. 5G technology is the next generation of mobile networking standards and promises to deliver an improved end-user experience by offering new applications and services through seamless coverage, a high data rate, low latency, significantly improved performance, and reliable communications.<\/p>\r\n<p>5G technology will increase energy efficiency, spectrum efficiency, and network efficiency, as well as the efficiency of other systems.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Evolution from 1G to 5G Technology<\/h2>\r\n<p><strong>1G, 2G, 3G &amp; 4G (\"G\" stands for \"Generation\")\u00a0<\/strong>are the generations of wireless telecom connectivity.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiram-prod.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/evolution_of_1g_to_5g_f3e90a0de5.png\" alt=\"evolution of 1g to 5g\" \/><\/p>\r\n<figure>\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td class=\"tb-color\"><strong>1G<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td class=\"tb-color\">\r\n<p>- It was the\u00a0<strong>first wireless telecom network system\u00a0<\/strong>introduced in the\u00a0<strong>1980s.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>- Early devices like<strong>\u201cbrick phones\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>\u201cbag phones\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0operated on 1G technology.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>2G<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>- Launched in the 1990s, 2G represented a shift from analogue to digital cell phones.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>3G<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>\r\n<p>- The 3G came with the new\u00a0<strong>Wireless Code-Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>- Introduced in the 2000s and provides mobile phones with<strong>\u00a0broadband-speed internet access.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>- Further development led to the creation of 3.5G; Speed- up to 7.2 MBPS.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>4G<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>\r\n<p>- The 4G, was launched in 2009 globally (India 2012).<\/p>\r\n<p>-\u00a0<strong>LTE (Long-Term Evolution)<\/strong>\u00a0is a fourth-generation (4G) wireless standard that provides increased network capacity and speed.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>LTE is also called\u00a0<strong>3.95G<\/strong>\u00a0and has been marketed as\u00a0<strong>4G LTE<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Advanced 4G.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>-\u00a0<strong>VoLTE<\/strong>\u00a0(Voice over Long-Term Evolution) allowed voice calls via the 4G network, supporting simultaneous voice and data services.<\/p>\r\n<p>- Speed: Upto 1 Gbps.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>5G<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>\r\n<p>- 5G, the 5th Generation Mobile technology, revolutionised the use of cell phones with its high bandwidth capabilities.<\/p>\r\n<p>- The network utilises advanced technologies to deliver ultra-fast internet and enhanced multimedia experiences.<\/p>\r\n<p>- It supports a\u00a0<strong>virtual private network\u00a0<\/strong>and offers high resolution in cell phones.<\/p>\r\n<p>- It also provides\u00a0<strong>subscriber supervision tools<\/strong>\u00a0for fast action.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<h3>Different Bands of 5G<\/h3>\r\n<p>A\u00a0<strong>band\u00a0<\/strong>refers to a specific range of frequencies in the\u00a0<strong>electromagnetic frequency spectrum<\/strong>\u00a0assigned to certain applications. There are essentially<strong>\u00a0three types of 5G bands<\/strong>\u00a0supported in India<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Low-band 5G\u00a0<\/strong>transmits around the<strong>\u00a0600 to 700 MHz\u00a0<\/strong>range<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>providing blanket coverage but offering slow speeds around 50 Mbps.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Mid-band 5G<\/strong>\u00a0transmits around\u00a0<strong>1.7 GHz to 2.5 GHz<\/strong>, offering a solid balance between coverage and speed (<strong>100-900 Mbps).<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>High-band 5G<\/strong>\u00a0operates at\u00a0<strong>24 GHz or higher<\/strong>, providing the fastest speeds (<strong>1 Gbps speeds)\u00a0<\/strong>over short distances.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiram-prod.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/different_5g_bands_43fb6b1407.png\" alt=\"different 5g bands\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h2>Advantages of 5G Technology<\/h2>\r\n<p>5G technology is positioned as the\u00a0<strong>next-generation wireless technology;<\/strong>\u00a0it builds on predecessors, introducing a paradigm shift and unlocking new possibilities for industries and consumers alike. The following are the advantageous features of the 5G technology:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiram-prod.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/features_of_5g_network_d97ea5d658.png\" alt=\"features of 5g network\" \/><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Increased Connectivity:<\/strong>\u00a05G technology is expected to deliver faster and more reliable internet connectivity, facilitating more devices to connect to the internet and enabling new technologies and applications to operate with<strong>\u00a0lower latency<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Enhanced Experiences:<\/strong>\u00a05G is expected to offer new and improved experiences in virtual and<strong>\u00a0augmented reality, gaming, and video streaming.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Enabling Real-Time Collaboration:<\/strong>\u00a0People will be able to interact and collaborate in real-time in\u00a0<strong>virtual environments<\/strong>\u00a0via 5G technology, which will eliminate the delays and lag that are currently experienced on slower networks.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Supporting High-Quality Content:<\/strong>\u00a05G technology is enabling the creation and delivery of high-quality content such as\u00a0<strong>3D<\/strong>\u00a0graphics<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Enabling new applications and services:<\/strong>\u00a05G technology is expected to enable\u00a0<strong>new metaverse applications<\/strong>\u00a0and services such as virtual education, virtual healthcare, and virtual tourism.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Limitations of 5G Technology<\/h2>\r\n<p>5G technology has the potential to improve enterprise operations and the competitiveness of the digital economy. However, there are also some negative aspects to consider, including the following:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>High infrastructure cost:<\/strong>\u00a05G service is likely to be more expensive, at least initially, because the deployment of 5G networks requires significant investment in infrastructure and its improved features may also be reflected in the price of 5G service.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Security Risks:<\/strong>\u00a05G networks, like any new technology, may be vulnerable to security threats such as\u00a0<strong>hacking and cyberattacks.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Privacy Concerns:<\/strong>\u00a0Concerns about personal privacy may arise as a result of the increased use of data and connected devices enabled by 5G technology.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Device Compatibility:\u00a0<\/strong>The transition to 5G necessitates compatible devices, with newer models supporting it. Older devices may not work with 5G, causing a fragmented user experience.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>This rollout may worsen economic and social inequalities by unevenly distributing access to technology.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Health Concerns:<\/strong>\u00a0There are concerns about the potential health consequences of 5G, such as increased exposure to\u00a0<strong>radiofrequency (RF) radiation.<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>However, the\u00a0<strong>World Health Org<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>anization<\/strong>\u00a0has determined that the levels of RF radiation emitted by 5G technology are safe.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Applications of 5G Technology<\/h2>\r\n<p>5G Technology will enable wireless service providers to develop innovative business models, benefiting various sectors like industrial, commercial, educational, healthcare, agriculture, etc.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Health Sector:\u00a0<\/strong>5G technology can facilitate high-quality telemedicine services, allowing for remote consultations, real-time monitoring of patients, and\u00a0<strong>tele-treatment\u00a0<\/strong>where doctors can treat patients while maintaining social distancing norms like those required during COVID-19.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Internet of Things (IoT)<\/strong><strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>5G\u2019s promise of\u00a0<strong>low latency and high network capacity\u00a0<\/strong>helps to eliminate the biggest limitations to\u00a0<strong>IoT expansion.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Augmented and Virtual Reality:\u00a0<\/strong>5G backhaul enables data speeds that are several times faster than 4G, ensuring real-time and uninterrupted AR\/VR experiences.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Agriculture:\u00a0<\/strong>Using data from sensors installed directly in fields, farmers can pinpoint which areas require water, have a disease, or require pest management.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Manufacturing:\u00a0<\/strong>Factories will also use 5G to control and analyze industrial processes with an unprecedented degree of precision.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>5G offers unimaginable possibilities to power Industry 4.0, from video monitoring to fixed wireless access, immersive experiences and smart stadiums toe-health, machine remote control, cloud\u00a0<strong>robotics<\/strong>, process automation, and assisted\/autonomous vehicles.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Logistics:Inventory tracking<\/strong>\u00a0is costly, slow, and difficult in shipping and logistics. 5G has the potential to improve vehicle-to-vehicle communication as well as vehicle-to-infrastructure communication.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Fleet monitoring and navigation<\/strong>\u00a0will become significantly easier at scale with 5G.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>India and 5G Technology<\/h2>\r\n<p>5G services were launched in India in\u00a0<strong>October 2022.\u00a0<\/strong>The 5G network has been rolled out in all\u00a0<strong>28 states and 8 UTs now.<\/strong>\u00a0This is one of the fastest 5G rollouts in the world.\u00a0<strong>As of October 2023, the number of 5G users now stands at over 100 million.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>According to the\u00a0<strong>Ericsson Mobility Report,<\/strong>\u00a0by the end of 2028, there will be\u00a0<strong>700 million 5G users in India<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>5G services<\/strong>\u00a0are also expected to play a major role in achieving the economic goal of making India a $5 trillion economy by 2024-25.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Promoting Digital India:\u00a0<\/strong>Fast and reliable mobile communication technologies provided by 5G are helping the government realize the objectives of the Digital India programme by empowering citizens through services like\u00a0<strong>Unified Payment Interface (UPI).<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>BharatNet Phase-III:\u00a0<\/strong>It aims to provide broadband connectivity to all gram panchayats (village councils) in the country, with the ultimate goal of connecting every village in India to the internet.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>5G and BharatNet will together have 1.2 billion internet users, making India the single largest connected nation.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Initiatives for 5G in India<\/h3>\r\n<p>The government of India has taken several steps for the 5G rollout in India:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>5G High-Level Forum:<\/strong>\u00a0It was set up in 2017 to articulate the vision for 5G in India and to recommend policy initiatives &amp; action plans to realize this vision.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>\u2018Indigenous 5G test bed\u2019:\u00a0<\/strong>This three-year program began in March 2018 to build proof-of-concept 5G prototypes that are broadly compliant with the 3GPP standards.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has offered the usage of 5G test beds free of cost to the Start-ups and MSMEs recognised by the Government of India up to January 2024.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>The National Digital Communication Policy-2018:<\/strong>\u00a0It envisages the following with respect to the rollout of 5G services:\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Enabling high-speed internet, the Internet of Things, through the rollout of 5G technologies<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Implementing an action plan for the rollout<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Ensuring availability of spectrum for 5G in 6 GHz bands<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Reviewing industry practices with respect to traffic prioritization to provide 5G-enabled applications and services<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Challenges for 5G Rollout in India<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Lack of infrastructure:\u00a0<\/strong>To have ubiquitous 5G network connectivity in India, it is important to enable the use of\u00a0<strong>street infrastructure<\/strong>\u00a0for hoisting small cells, deployment of in-building solutions, and fabrication of towers.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>5G standards:\u00a0<\/strong>A variant of the global standard for 5G (3GPP-\u00a0<strong>3rd Generation Partnership Project<\/strong>) has been developed in India, known as\u00a0<strong>Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India<\/strong>\u00a0(TSDSI)\u2019s Radio Interface Technology (TDSI-RIT).\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>TDSI-RIT<\/strong>\u00a0improves rural coverage while lowering costs to cover a specific, defined area.
