It is also referred to as the period of Tamil Literature. The term \"Sangam\" refers to assemblies or gatherings of poets and scholars that took place in ancient South India. These gatherings were instrumental in nurturing a literary tradition that focused on various aspects of life, including love, war, ethics, politics, and nature.<\/p>\r\n<p>The works composed by different poets during the Sangam age provide insights into the social, cultural, and political dynamics of the time. The Sangam age left a significant cultural legacy, influencing the region's history and heritage.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Sangam Literature<\/h2>\r\n<p>According to Tamil scholars,\u00a0<strong>three sangams\u00a0<\/strong>(academies of Tamil poets) existed in ancient Tamil Nadu, also known as\u00a0<strong>Muchchangam<\/strong>. Under the Pandyan dynasty's royal patronage, these Sangam flourished. These Tamil literary works continue to be valuable resources for rewriting Sangam age history.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>First Sangam: Legendary gods and sages\u00a0<\/strong>attended the first Sangam held in\u00a0<strong>Madurai<\/strong>, although there are no recorded accounts of it.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Second Sangam:\u00a0<\/strong>It was held in\u00a0<strong>Kapadapuram<\/strong>\u00a0in Tamilnadu.Except for\u00a0<strong>Tolkappiyam<\/strong>, none of the literary works written during this Sangam survived.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Third Sangam:<\/strong>\u00a0The third Sangam was established in\u00a0<strong>Madurai by Mudathirumaran<\/strong>. Although many poets participated and created substantial work, only some persisted.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Tolkappiyam, Ettutogai, Pattuppattu, Pathinenkilkanakku<\/strong>, and the two epics Silappathigaram and Manimegalai are among the works in the Sangam literature corpus.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Pathinen Melkanakku<\/strong>\u00a0includes\u00a0<strong>Ettutogai and Pattuppattu<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Early Sangam Literature<\/h2>\r\n<p>The earliest Sangam literature provides invaluable insights into the social, cultural, and literary aspects of ancient South India. It incudes Agattiyam, Tolkappiyam, Ettuttogai and Pattuppattu.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Aham and Puram Concept<\/h3>\r\n<p>The use of the\u00a0<strong>poetic form<\/strong>\u00a0is an important aspect of Sangam literature.\u00a0<strong>Tholkappiyam<\/strong>, an ancient Tamil treatise, divides poetry into two categories:\u00a0<strong>Aham and Puram.<\/strong>\u00a0These two are related in the sense that they are the polar opposites of each other while also complementing each other.<\/p>\r\n<figure>\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td class=\"tb-color\"><strong>Aham (Agam)<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td class=\"tb-color\"><strong>Puram<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>- It represents the individual, the interior, the feminine, and the various stages of love.<\/td>\r\n<td>- It represents the world, the exterior, the masculine, violence, and heroism.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>- Women dominated<\/td>\r\n<td>- Male-dominated<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>- Concerns on subjects such as love and sexual relations.<\/td>\r\n<td>- Concerns many issues, such as wars, kings, poets and personal virtues<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<h3>Agattiyam (Akattiyam)<\/h3>\r\n<p><strong>Agattiyam\u00a0<\/strong>was the earliest book on\u00a0<strong>Tamil grammar<\/strong>\u00a0according to Tamil tradition.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>This book was a\u00a0<strong>non-extant text (not existing)<\/strong>, written and compiled by sage\u00a0<strong>Agattiar\u00a0<\/strong>(Agastya) during the First Sangam.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Tolkappiyam<\/h3>\r\n<p>It was written by\u00a0<strong>Tolkappiyar\u00a0<\/strong>and is considered the first Tamil literary work.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>First mentioned by name in\u00a0<strong>Iraiyanar's Akapporul<\/strong>\u00a0as an authoritative text on Tamil grammar.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>This was the most ancient Tamil grammar text and the\u00a0<strong>oldest extant long work of Tamil literature.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li>Arranged into three books \u2013 Eluttatikaram, Sollatikaram and Porulatikaram<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Source<\/strong>: It also gives an insight into the\u00a0<strong>political and socio-economic<\/strong>\u00a0conditions of the time.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Ettuttogai<\/h3>\r\n<p>Ettuttogai is a classical Tamil poetic work consisting of eight works long and short, both or eight anthologies. Ptolemy.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>The Chera, Chola, and Pandya kings\u00a0<\/strong>in the southern region of the Mauryan empire are mentioned in<strong>\u00a0Asokan inscriptions.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li>The\u00a0<strong>Hathigumpha\u00a0<\/strong>inscription of Kharavela of Kalinga also mentions Tamil kingdoms.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Art and Architecture During Sangam Age<\/h2>\r\n<p>Art and architecture during the Sangam Age in ancient South India were not as extensively documented as the literature. While physical remnants are rare, references in literature and archaeological findings provide insights into the art and architecture during the Sangam age.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Art of Sangam Age<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The Sangam age was characterised by the widespread<strong>\u00a0popularity of poetry, music, and dancing.\u00a0<\/strong>Kings, chieftains, and nobles lavishly bestowed gifts upon poets.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Panar and Viraliyar, two singing bards,\u00a0<\/strong>were common performers in the royal courts. They were experts at folk music and dance.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Dance and music were both highly developed arts. The Sangam literature makes reference to a wide range of<strong>\u00a0yazhs and drums<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Kanigaiyar performed dances.\u00a0<strong>Koothu\u00a0<\/strong>was the most popular form of entertainment among the people.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Sangam\u00a0<strong>painters\u00a0<\/strong>employed the painting guidebook\u00a0<strong>Oviya Nul\u00a0<\/strong>to direct their creative endeavours.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Architecture of Sangam Age<\/h3>\r\n<p>Information and documentation regarding the architecture of the Sangam ages are limited. It can, however, be deduced from literary references.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>The Hero Stone worship (Nadu Kal worship):\u00a0<\/strong>During the Sangam age, Nadu Kal worship was important. The Hero Stone was erected to commemorate the warrior's valour in battle. Many hero stones with legends carved on them have been discovered in various parts of Tamil Nadu.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Port cities:\u00a0<\/strong>Pattinappalai refers to the seaport of\u00a0<strong>Puhar<\/strong>.
