

{"id":4021,"date":"2026-01-06T00:17:20","date_gmt":"2026-01-05T18:47:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/?p=4021"},"modified":"2026-01-07T10:38:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T05:08:37","slug":"nuclear-triad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/nuclear-triad\/","title":{"rendered":"Nuclear Triad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<strong>Nuclear Triad<\/strong>\u00a0of India is a three-sided military-force structure consisting of\u00a0<strong>ICBMs (land-based nuclear missiles)<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>SSBNs\u00a0<\/strong>(<strong>nuclear-missile-armed submarines)<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Strategic Bombers<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>strategic aircraft with nuclear bombs and missiles)<\/strong>. The theory underlying the triad is that spreading the country\u2019s extensive nuclear arsenals across various weapons platforms and dimensions would provide a\u00a0<strong>Credible Minimum Deterrence (CMD)<\/strong>. In 2018, with the deployment of\u00a0<strong>INS Arihant (an SSBN)<\/strong>,a Strategic Strike Nuclear Submarine<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>India got its fully operational Nuclear Triad.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Components of India\u2019s Nuclear Triad<\/h2>\r\n<p>India\u2019s Nuclear Triad, as with other nations, comprises three components, each having the capability of a nuclear strike - Land, Air, and Naval (Sea).<\/p>\r\n<h3>Land-based Components<\/h3>\r\n<p>It mainly includes missiles that can be launched from land-based platforms such as\u00a0<strong>ICBMs\u00a0<\/strong>(Inter-continental Ballistic Missiles)<strong>, SRBMs\u00a0<\/strong>(Short Range Ballistic Missiles)<strong>, etc.\u00a0<\/strong>The ICBMsare quite\u00a0<strong>responsive\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>lethal<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>ICBMs are deployed in hundreds of silos and can be launched and reach targets within minutes, creating a nearly insurmountable targeting problem for adversaries.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>For example, the\u00a0<strong>Agni-V missile\u00a0<\/strong>can go up to a range of 5500 Km with nuclear warheads.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Other land-based missiles that can support the triad are<strong>\u00a0Prithvi, Akash, Trishul<\/strong>, etc.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Sea-based Component<\/h3>\r\n<p>This component majorly includes the Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear Submarines<strong>\u00a0(SSBNs).<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>The SSBNs are considered survivable<\/strong>\u00a0because a portion of the SSBN fleet is always on patrol, making it very difficult for potential adversaries to track all of them, contributing to their survivability.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>For example,\u00a0<strong>INS Arihant\u00a0<\/strong>with<strong>\u00a0K-15 Sagarika missiles\u00a0<\/strong>(700 Kms range) and\u00a0<strong>K-4<\/strong>\u00a0(3500 Kms range) missiles.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Also, the trials are going on with\u00a0<strong>INS Arighat\u00a0<\/strong>which has a possibility of getting inducted by\u00a0<strong>2024<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>It is more suitable to carry more K-4 missiles than INS Arihant.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The SSBNs play a crucial role in the Second Strike against any nuclear attack complementing the Nuclear Doctrine as their location is unknown.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Air-based Component<\/h3>\r\n<p>It majorly includes the\u00a0<strong>Bombers which are considered as flexible for attacking.\u00a0<\/strong>The bomber aircraft are flexible and can resolve during a crisis and provide a variety of deployment and yield options when placed on alert.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The aircraft that would work as bombers include the\u00a0<strong>Sukhoi Su-30MKI<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mirage 2000H<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>SEPECAT Jaguar,<\/strong>\u00a0and most importantly\u00a0<strong>Rafale.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li>The Land and air strike capabilities are controlled by\u00a0<strong>Strategic Forces Command<\/strong>, a part of the\u00a0<strong>Nuclear Command Authority<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>NCA was created in\u00a0<strong>2003\u00a0<\/strong>and is responsible for the\u00a0<strong>management\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>administration\u00a0<\/strong>of the country's tactical and strategic\u00a0<strong>nuclear weapons\u00a0<\/strong>stockpile.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>NCA is the\u00a0<strong>authority\u00a0<\/strong>responsible for command, control, and operational decisions regarding\u00a0<strong>India's nuclear weapons programme<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiram-prod.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/indias_nuclear_triad_1b51f2d05e.webp\" alt=\"Indias Nuclear Triad\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<h2>Significance of India\u2019s Nuclear Triad<\/h2>\r\n<p>India is among very few countries (<strong>United States, Russia, China, India, and Pakistan<\/strong>) which have achieved the capability of nuclear triad. The Nuclear Triad has its own significance in providing security to a nation.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Capability of Second Strike:<\/strong>\u00a0The Nuclear Triad helps the country to counter-attack a nation after being attacked by nuclear warheads.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>This triad ensures that even after being hit by a nuclear warhead, one can counter the attacking nation.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Balance of Power:<\/strong>\u00a0For India, this triad is very crucial, since it shares its borders with its\u00a0<strong>nuclear-empowered<\/strong>\u00a0adversaries such as\u00a0<strong>Pakistan\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>China<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Both countries have sophisticated arsenals and believe they have the assets to credibly harm India.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Having a nuclear triad, India is now aiming to counterbalance China\u2019s assertiveness in South Asia.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Credible Minimum Deterrence:\u00a0<\/strong>It is one of the objectives of\u00a0<strong>India\u2019s Nuclear Doctrine<\/strong>\u00a0which is complemented by possessing a fully operational nuclear triad.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>It provides sufficient deterrence from any attacking nation by creating a\u00a0<strong>fear of the consequences<\/strong>\u00a0(Second strike).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Massive Retaliation:<\/strong>\u00a0As per the Nuclear Doctrine, India\u2019s second strike would be massive and the Triad supplements it.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Hence, the Triad provides\u00a0<strong>resilience\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>feasibility\u00a0<\/strong>to counter.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Limitations of India\u2019s Nuclear Triad<\/h2>\r\n<p>The deterrence of a nuclear triad depends on the vehicles (platforms) and the capabilities of missiles. The Nuclear Triad of India, though complete, still faces a few shortcomings.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Regarding sea-based components:<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>There is a need for\u00a0<strong>more than one SSBN<\/strong>\u00a0(nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine) to ensure continuous deployment at sea.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The K-15 missiles\u2019 utility is\u00a0<strong>limited by its 750 km range<\/strong>, which means that to counter China, submarines need to be present in the South China Sea to make the K-15 effective.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The INS Arihant has the capacity to carry a\u00a0<strong>lesser number<\/strong>\u00a0of long-range<strong>\u00a0K-4<\/strong>\u00a0missiles (still in development).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Regarding Strategic Bombers:<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The air component of the triad includes nuclear warheaded\u00a0<strong>Strategic Bombers\u00a0<\/strong>for which India depends on other countries like Russia (<strong>Sukhoi<\/strong>), France (<strong>Rafale<\/strong>), etc.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>This increases the\u00a0<strong>import burden<\/strong>\u00a0on the country as well.
