In 2004, the Indian Government recognised languages meeting criteria like\u00a0<strong>antiquity, literary richness, and distinctiveness\u00a0<\/strong>as \u201cClassical Languages\u201d. Among Indian languages, currently, Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia have been given the status of classical languages.<\/p>\r\n<p>To preserve and promote these foundational pillars, the Indian Government has established the\u00a0<strong>Center of Excellence for Studies\u00a0<\/strong>in Classical Languages at the\u00a0<strong>Central Institute of Indian Languages(CIIL)<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mysore<\/strong>, under the Department of Higher Education. This initiative underscores the enduring relevance of classical languages in today's linguistic landscape, strengthening a deep appreciation for India's cultural and linguistic diversity.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Classical Languages of India<\/h2>\r\n<p>India has recognised six languages as 'Classical Languages' due to their rich literary and historical heritage dating back to ancient times. These languages are\u00a0<strong>Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>The National Education Policy 2020<\/strong>\u00a0also mandates the preservation of works of literature in three additional languages:\u00a0<strong>Pali, Persian (Farsi), and Prakrit<\/strong>, raising the total to\u00a0<strong>nine\u00a0<\/strong>classical Ganga\u00a0<\/strong>dynasty rule.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<h2>Criteria for Classical Language Status<\/h2>\r\n<p>The<strong>\u00a0Ministry of Culture in 2014,\u00a0<\/strong>laid down the following criteria for declaring a language as \u2018Classical\u2019 in India:<\/p>\r\n<figure>\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td must have an ancient history and literary tradition over\u00a0<strong>1500-2000 years.<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Large Body of Literature<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>- It must have a large body of ancient texts and literature appreciated even today.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Distinguished Literary Heritage<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>- The language must have a distinguished literary heritage not derived from another language.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Discontinuity<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>- There may be a discontinuity between the classical language and its later forms or its offshoots, given that the classical language and literature are distinct from modern.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<h3>Benefits of Classical Status<\/h3>\r\n<p>The languages declared as \u2018classical\u2019 receive several benefits from the government to promote them further such as:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Two international awards\u00a0<\/strong>are instituted annually for scholars who have made exemplary research contributions, teaching or promoting the classical languages of India. This honours their service to preserving heritage.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>A<strong>\u00a0Centre of Excellence\u00a0<\/strong>is established by the Government to stimulate advanced research specifically focused on each of the classical languages declared. This powers further literary and linguistic study.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The<strong>\u00a0University Grants Commission(UGC)<\/strong>\u00a0sponsors the creation of Professional Chairs related to the classical languages of India in central universities and research institutions.
