It attracted scholars from India, China, Tibet, Persia, and other parts of Asia. In the 7th century CE, notable Chinese scholars<strong>\u00a0I-Qing<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0Xuan Zang<\/strong>\u00a0visited Nalanda and documented their experiences in detail.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, Nalanda University faced destruction in 1193 AD at the hands of\u00a0<strong>Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khilji<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0To revive this historic institution, the Indian government enacted the Nalanda University Act in 2010, which implemented decisions made at the East Asia Summit to establish a new Nalanda University.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Nalanda University History<\/h2>\r\n<p>Nalanda University was established in the 5th century CE, and became a prominent hub for Buddhist studies, attracting students and scholars from various regions.\u00a0<strong>Kumargupta I\u00a0<\/strong>of the Gupta dynasty founded\u00a0<strong>Nalanda Mahavihara\u00a0<\/strong>in\u00a0<strong>427 CE<\/strong>\u00a0located in present-day Rajgir,\u00a0<strong>Bihar.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Contribution by Palas:\u00a0<\/strong>The Palas were known to be Buddhists. An inscription from Nalanda records that\u00a0<strong>Dharmapala &amp; Devapala\u00a0<\/strong>gifted villages for the upkeep of the monastery.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Nalanda received royal patronage from\u00a0<strong>Harshavardana<\/strong>\u00a0(606-648 C.E.) and the 7th-century\u00a0<strong>king of Assam, Bhaskaravarma<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Along with this, it got\u00a0<strong>grants\u00a0<\/strong>from many<strong>\u00a0foreign rulers<\/strong>\u00a0as well.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Destruction: The university was destroyed at the end of the 12th century by a Bakhtiyar Khilji.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Rediscovery of site:\u00a0<\/strong>The Nalanda University site was first rediscovered in\u00a0<strong>1812<\/strong>\u00a0by Scottish surveyor F<strong>rancis Buchanan-Hamilton.<\/strong>\u00a0Although he noted the presence of ruins and Buddhist images, he did not initially connect them to the famed Nalanda University.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>This connection was later made by\u00a0<strong>Sir Alexander Cunningham<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>1861<\/strong>, who identified the site as the ancient university.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Nalanda University in Modern Era<\/h3>\r\n<p>In modern times, efforts have been made to revive Nalanda as a centre of higher education, leading to the establishment of the new\u00a0<strong>Nalanda University in 2010<\/strong>, which aims to promote international learning and research. The site of ancient Nalanda was designated a\u00a0<strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016<\/strong>, highlighting its historical and cultural significance.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Nalanda University Features<\/h2>\r\n<p>Nalanda University, designated as an Institute of National Importance (INI), is the flagship project of the Ministry of External Affairs. It symbolizes India's rich cultural and historical legacy and plays a key role in the revival of San\u0101tana Dharma in the country.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Diverse Curriculum:<\/strong>\u00a0Nalanda offered a wide range of subjects, including philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and logic, reflecting a holistic approach to education that encouraged critical thinking and interdisciplinary studies.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Complex and Artworks<\/strong>: While the original\u00a0<strong>Mahavihara<\/strong>\u00a0was a much larger complex, the surviving remains of Nalanda consist of\u00a0<strong>11\u00a0<\/strong><strong>viharas<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>14 temples<\/strong>, along with many smaller shrines and votive structures.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>These remnants demonstrate key attributes of the site, such as axial planning and a layout along a\u00a0<strong>north-south axis.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Artworks<\/strong>: Its stucco, stone, and metal art retain iconographic features that enabled changes in the Buddhist belief system and the transition from\u00a0<strong>Mahayana to Vajraya<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Library:\u00a0<\/strong>It had a nine-story library where monks meticulously copied books and documents so that individual scholars could have their collections.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Accommodation:\u00a0<\/strong>It had dormitories for students, perhaps a first for an educational institution, housing 10,000 students in the university\u2019s heyday and providing accommodations for 2,000 professors.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Sariputra\u2019s Stupa:\u00a0<\/strong>Although the site was a pilgrimage destination from the 1st Century A.D., it has a link with the Buddha as he often came here and two of his chief disciples, Sariputra and Moggallana, came from this area.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Naropa\u2019s Cell:\u00a0<\/strong>One of the cells belonged to Naropa, who was instrumental in bringing Buddhism to Tibet, along with such Nalanda luminaries as Shantarakshita and Padmasambhava<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Buddhist scholars<\/strong>\u00a0had studied and taught at Nalanda including Nagarjuna, Dharmapala, Dharmakirti, Dinnaga, Jinamitra Santaraksita, Padmasambhava, Candrakirti, Silabhadra, and Atisa.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Aryabhata<\/strong>\u00a0is thought to have led the university in the sixth century CE.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Nalanda University Significance<\/h2>\r\n<p>Nalanda is a rare combination of outstanding achievements in institution-building, site-planning, art and architecture.
