The infection itself (sometimes called Zika fever) is usually mild and goes away on its own. However, the impact of the virus has most significantly been seen in <strong>pregnant women<\/strong> and their fetuses. Zika virus infection is associated with <strong>microcephaly <\/strong>in newborns, which means their head is smaller than normal. It can also cause <strong>Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome<\/strong>, a rare nerve disorder that causes muscle weakness and paralysis.<\/p>\r\n<h2 id=\"about-zika-virus\">About the Zika Virus<\/h2>\r\n<p>Zika virus <strong>disease <\/strong>is caused by a virus from the <i><strong>Flavivirus<\/strong><\/i><strong> genus<\/strong>, Flaviviridae family.Zika is mostly<strong> transmitted through the bite<\/strong> of an infected <strong>Aedes species mosquito (<\/strong>Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) which acts as vectors for dengue and yellow fever as well.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Zika virus infection can cause<strong> microcephaly<\/strong> in newborns, which means their head is smaller than normal. It can also cause <strong>Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome, <\/strong>a rare nerve disorder that causes muscle weakness and paralysis.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The Zika virus was named after the Zika Forest in Uganda, where it had been discovered for the first time in 1947 and the <strong>first human<\/strong> case of Zika was reported in <strong>1952<\/strong>.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The Zika virus caused a significant <strong>epidemic in Brazil in 2015.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>In 2016<strong> WHO <\/strong>declared the Zika virus, various neurological illnesses, and microcephaly as <strong>Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC)<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Spread in India:<\/strong> Zika virus cases have been detected in the states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan in<strong> 2018 <\/strong>and Kerala, Maharashtra in <strong>2021<\/strong>. However, Zika virus-associated microcephaly was not recorded.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><strong>Structure<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>Zika virus is a <strong>single-stranded RNA virus <\/strong>belonging to the Flaviviridae family. The Asian and African lineages are the two major geographically distinct lineages of the virus.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The <strong>African lineage <\/strong>affects <strong>monkeys and apes<\/strong> as primary hosts and<strong> humans<\/strong> as secondary hosts, whereas the <strong>Asian lineage<\/strong> affects <strong>humans <\/strong>as primary hosts.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The Zika virus is a single-strand ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus and the RNA is translated into a single polyprotein that encodes <strong>three structural proteins<\/strong>\u2014capsid (C), membrane (M), and envelope (E)\u2014as well as seven nonstructural proteins.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The <strong>viral particle <\/strong>is formed by <strong>structural proteins<\/strong>, as the name implies.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Nonstructural proteins<\/strong> aid in genome replication and packaging, as well as manipulating host processes in favour of the virus.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>For the first time,<strong> cryo-electron microscopy <\/strong>was utilised to reveal the near-atomic structure of the Zika virus.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<figure class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vajiram-prod.s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com\/structure_of_zika_virus_3bbeba33ca.webp\" alt=\"Structure of Zika Virus\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<h3><strong>Transmission Modes<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>Zika virus is primarily transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected <i>Aedes aegypti <\/i>mosquito. Other ways of viral propagation include:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Through <strong>sexual contact <\/strong>with the sick person<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Transfusions of blood and organ transplantation<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Congenital infection <\/strong>from mother to foetus because the virus is capable of crossing the placental barrier.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Testing: <\/strong>Zika virus disease diagnostics is primarily based on the detection of viral RNA from clinical specimens (blood, saliva, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, amniotic fluid, semen, and breast milk).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><strong>Symptoms<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>The <strong>incubation period <\/strong>is usually between<strong> three to twelve days <\/strong>after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Approximately 80% of the infections are asymptomatic.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The <strong>most common symptoms <\/strong>are a maculopapular rash (+\/-itchy), arthralgia, fatigue, non-purulent conjunctivitis\/conjunctival hyperaemia, myalgia, and headache.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The maculopapular rash frequently begins on the face and spreads across the body. Retro-orbital pain and gastrointestinal symptoms are less common.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><strong>Treatment<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>There is <strong>no vaccination or preventative treatment <\/strong>available.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The treatment is symptomatic and mostly focuses on hydration, pain alleviation, and antihistamines for pruritic rash.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The key to controlling the spread of the Zika virus is to have a comprehensive approach that includes regular <strong>vector surveillance and integrated vector management<\/strong> of Aedes mosquitos.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Environmental modification<\/strong>\/manipulation, <strong>personal protection<\/strong> through protective clothing and repellents, <strong>biological control <\/strong>using larvivorous fish and bacillus thuringiensis, and <strong>chemical control <\/strong>using larvicides(temephos) and adulticides (pyrethrum, malathion), are all part of integrated vector management.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2 id=\"challenges\">Challenges<\/h2>\r\n<p>The challenges in India\u2019s Zika virus management are listed below:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Limited knowledge:<\/strong> concerning the virus's epidemiological properties and its interactions with other arboviruses, such as dengue.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Limited lab capacity<\/strong> and cross-reactivity of diagnostic flavivirus antibody assays.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Absence of Herd immunity: <\/strong>In freshly affected countries. High population mobility and cross-border movement of infected travellers also act as significant challenges.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>No vaccinations or antiviral treatments are available:<\/strong> for microcephaly and other birth defects in babies, as well as cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome and other neurological diseases.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Other factors: <\/strong>Favourable breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitos. Inadequate vector surveillance system.
