It aimsto <strong>mitigate greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong> associated with traditional hydrogen production methods.<\/p>\r\n<p>While <strong>not entirely carbon-free<\/strong>, blue hydrogen offers a<strong> lower-emission alternative to conventional fossil fuels<\/strong>, positioning it as a bridging solution as the world transitions towards more sustainable energy sources like <strong>green hydrogen<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<h2>About Blue Hydrogen<\/h2>\r\n<p>Depending on the nature of the <strong>method of its extraction<\/strong>, hydrogen is categorised into three categories, namely, <strong>Grey, Blue and Green<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Blue hydrogen is a form of hydrogen produced from natural gas using <strong>carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology<\/strong>. In this process, <strong>natural gas and heated water (steam) <\/strong>are combined, which produces hydrogen as the main output. However, <strong>carbon dioxide (CO2)<\/strong> is also produced as a<strong> by-product<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The CO2 generated during this process is <strong>captured and stored <\/strong>underground, preventing its release into the atmosphere.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Hence, blue hydrogen is a <strong>lower-emission alternative<\/strong> to natural gas and other fossil fuels.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Blue Hydrogen Production<\/h2>\r\n<p>To extract the blue hydrogen, the main processes include the Shell Blue Hydrogen Process (SBHP), steam methane reforming (SMR) and auto thermal reforming (ATR).<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Natural gas extraction<\/strong>: Natural gas is extracted from underground reservoirs through drilling and fracking operations.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Hydrogen separation<\/strong>: The methane in natural gas is subjected to a chemical process, such as steam methane reforming or auto-thermal reforming, which separates the hydrogen molecules from the carbon atoms.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)<\/strong>: The <strong>CO2<\/strong> generated during the hydrogen production process is captured using various technologies such as absorption, adsorption, or membrane separation.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The captured CO2 is then<strong> transported and stored underground<\/strong> in geological formations or depleted oil and gas reservoirs.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Blue Hydrogen Significance<\/h2>\r\n<p>Blue hydrogen holds a variety of uses and possibilities. It can act as a<strong> bridging fuel <\/strong>for current systems, particularly in areas where direct electrification might not be practical or economical.
