Major ports handle nearly 95% of India's trade by volume and 70% by value.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Major ports in India<\/strong> are administered by the Central Government (Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways), while non-major (minor) ports are under State Governments or private entities. Major ports on the west coast include Mumbai, Kandla, Mangalore, Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), Mormugao, and Cochin; and major ports on the east coast include Chennai, Tuticorin, Visakhapatnam, Paradip, Kolkata, and Ennore.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Major Ports in India<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are <strong>14 major ports in India<\/strong> (12 operational and proposed Vadhawan and Galathea Bay ports) and more than 200 non-major ports, establishing it as an undisputed maritime powerhouse. With an annual handling capacity of 915 million tonnes in FY 2025-26, it supports 95% of trade by volume and 70% by value, leveraging India's strategic Indian Ocean location.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">oversees major ports, while <\/span>minor ports<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are managed by <\/span>states<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
