Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar\u00a0<\/strong>was a great Indian scientist and is known as\u00a0\u2018The Father of Research Laboratories\u2019<\/strong>. He was also the Founder-Director of the\u00a0Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR).<\/strong>His contributions to the magnetochemistry and physical chemistry of emulsions were widely acknowledged. Dr. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar also did commendable work in applied chemistry. In his honor, the prestigious\u00a0\"Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) Prize for Science & Technology\"<\/strong>\u00a0was established.<\/p>\r\n

Life of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar<\/h2>\r\n

Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar was\u00a0born on February 21, 1894, in Bhera,<\/strong>\u00a0Punjab (now in Pakistan). At an early age, he developed an interest in\u00a0engineering and science<\/strong>, geometry and algebra, and in making mechanical toys.<\/p>\r\n

Education and Career<\/h3>\r\n

Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar enrolled at\u00a0Forman Christian College in 1913<\/strong>\u00a0to pursue a BSc degree. He studied\u00a0physics and chemistry.\u00a0<\/strong>In 1921, he went to England to complete his DSc (Doctor of Science) at London University after finishing his Master's degree.<\/p>\r\n

  • Bhatnagar returned to India in 1921, joined\u00a0Banaras Hindu University,<\/strong>\u00a0and created an active school of\u00a0physico-chemical research.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n

    Contribution of Shanti Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar<\/h2>\r\n

    Dr. Bhatnagar played a significant role in building\u00a0post-independent Science and Technology<\/strong>\u00a0infrastructure and in the formulation of India\u2019s Science and Technology policies.<\/p>\r\n

      \r\n\t
    • He held a number of important positions in the Government:<\/strong>\r\n
        \r\n\t
      • First chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).<\/li>\r\n\t
      • Secretary of the Ministry of Education and the Government's Educational Advisor<\/li>\r\n\t
      • Secretary of the Atomic Energy Commission<\/li>\r\n\t
      • First Secretary to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Scientific Research<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t
      • He played a significant role in the establishment of\u00a0India's National Research Development Corporation (NRDC).<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t
      • After Independence, he was an ardent proponent of industrial research, and his negotiations with the oil industries resulted in the establishment of several\u00a0oil refineries in India.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n

        Contribution to Chemistry<\/h3>\r\n

        His contributions to magnetochemistry and the physical chemistry of emulsions were widely acknowledged.<\/p>\r\n

          \r\n\t
        • Magnetic Chemistry:<\/strong>\u00a0Bhatnagar and K.N. Mathur jointly invented the\u00a0Bhatnagar-Mathur Magnetic Interference Balance<\/strong>\u00a0in 1928.\r\n\r\n
            \r\n\t
          • It was one of the most sensitive instruments for determining magnetic properties.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t
          • Work in applied and industrial chemistry:<\/strong>\r\n
              \r\n\t
            • The first industrial problem undertaken by Bhatnagar was the development of a process to\u00a0convert bagasse (peelings of sugarcane) into food cake for cattle.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t
            • Attock Oil Company\u00a0<\/strong>was having difficulty drilling for crude oil because the thick, viscous agent used to prevent oil leakage into the drill bit kept solidifying. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar asked Attock to add\u00a0acacia gum,<\/strong>\u00a0also called Indian gum, obtained from the sap of the acacia tree, to the mixture to reduce the viscosity of the fluid.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t
            • During World War II,<\/strong>\u00a0Bhatnagar worked on innovations for the British army and Indian troops.\r\n\r\n
                \r\n\t
              • He developed\u00a0anti-gas cloth and plastic from waste,<\/strong>\u00a0as well as a method to use petroleum extraction byproducts in the oil industry.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n

                Honours<\/h3>\r\n

                Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar's contributions to science were acknowledged with several prominent\u00a0honours<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n

                • Awarded the \u2018Order of the British Empire\u2019 (OBE) in 1936.<\/li>\r\n\t
                • Fellow of the Royal Society in 1943.<\/li>\r\n\t
                • President of the Indian Chemical Society, National Institute of Sciences of India, and Indian National Science Congress<\/li>\r\n\t
                • Padma Bhushan in 1954.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n

                  Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award<\/h2>\r\n

                  The prestigious\u00a0Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize<\/strong>, instituted in 1958 by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), is awarded for excellence in the sciences and is a tribute to the first Director-General of CSIR, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar.<\/p>\r\n

                  • Eligibility Criteria:\u00a0<\/strong>Any citizen of India engaged in research in any field of science and technology\u00a0up to the age of 45 years\u00a0<\/strong>as reckoned on December 31st of the year preceding the year of the Prize.\r\n\r\n
                      \r\n\t
                    • Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI)<\/strong>\u00a0working in India are also eligible.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t
                    • Nature of the Prize:\u00a0<\/strong>SSB Prizes, each of the value of\u00a0Rs 5 lacs,<\/strong>\u00a0are awarded annually for notable and outstanding research, applied or fundamental, in the\u00a0following disciplines:<\/strong>\r\n
