He is known as the \"Father of Plastic Surgery\" and is credited with the advancement of medicine in ancient India. Sushruta took surgery to admirable heights and that era was later regarded as \u2018<strong>The Golden Age of Surgery\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0in ancient India.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Background about Sushruta<\/h2>\r\n<p>Sushruta is thought to have been born in the<strong>\u00a07th century BC\u00a0<\/strong>in eastern India. He belonged to a rich heritage of learned scholars.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Sushruta is considered a son of\u00a0<strong>Sage Vishvamitra<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>However,<strong>\u00a0Late Vedic\u00a0<\/strong>hymns attributed to Sushruta suggested that he flourished in the late Vedic period, which would place him around 1000 BCE.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Sushruta\u2019s Literary work<\/h2>\r\n<p><strong>Sushruta Samhita:\u00a0<\/strong>It is regarded as one of the\u00a0<strong>'Great Trilogy of Ayurvedic Medicine'\u00a0<\/strong>(Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Astanga Hridaya) and is the foundation of the ancient Hindu form of medicine known as \u2018<strong>Ayurveda\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>\"Sushruta Samhita\"<\/strong>\u00a0relates to the school of surgery and contains\u00a0<strong>principles of surgery,<\/strong>\u00a0a description of more than 100 surgical\u00a0<strong>instruments<\/strong>, a description of\u00a0<strong>operative procedures<\/strong>, 650 drugs, and descriptions of anatomy, embryology, toxicology, and therapeutics.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The Sushruta Samhita is organized into five major sections:\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Sutrasthana<\/strong>: Primary principles dealing with basic principles of medical sciences and pharmacology;<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Nidana:\u00a0<\/strong>It deals with pathological concepts;<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Sarirasthana:\u00a0<\/strong>On human anatomy;<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Chikitsasthanam<\/strong>: On medical and surgical management;<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Kalpasthanam:\u00a0<\/strong>On toxicology.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Contribution of Sushruta in Medicine<\/h2>\r\n<p>Sushruta is regarded as the 'Father of Indian Medicine' and the 'Father of Plastic Surgery.' Modern-day Ayurveda heavily draws from the Sushruta Samhita. This ancient text outlines a holistic approach to medicinal treatment, categorizes the divisions of Ayurveda, and expounds on Sushruta's unique methods for Panchakarma and other specialized treatments.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The contributions of Sushruta are not only limited to the surgical field but also extended to the different branches of anatomy, embryology, gynaecology, obstetrics, paediatrics, toxicology, medicine,etc.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Contribution to Surgery<\/h3>\r\n<p>Sushruta is known as the \u2018Father of Surgery\u2019.
