He was a great institution builder who not only established but also assisted in establishing several institutions in various fields.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Early Life and Education of Vikram Sarabhai<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Vikram Sarabhai was born on\u00a0<strong>August 12, 1919<\/strong>, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>His father, Ambalal Sarabhai, was an industrialist and was associated with the Ahmedabad mill strike of 1918.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>He studied at the University of Cambridge; he returned to India after the breakout of the Second World War and joined the\u00a0<strong>Indian Institute of Science\u00a0<\/strong>in Bangalore.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Here, he began research on<strong>\u00a0cosmic rays<\/strong>\u00a0under the supervision of Sir\u00a0<strong>C. V. Raman<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>After the war, he again returned to Cambridge in 1945 and received a PhD in 1947 for his thesis, \u201c<strong>Cosmic Ray Investigation in Tropical Latitudes<\/strong>\u201d.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>He returned to India after receiving his PhD to continue his research in cosmic ray physics.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>He studied interplanetary space, solar-terrestrial interactions, and geomagnetism.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Vikram Sarabhai passed away on December 30, 1971, in Kerala.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Career<\/h3>\r\n<p>After returning to India, Vikram Sarabhai embarked on a fruitful career in academia and research.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Physical Research Laboratory (PRL):<\/strong>\u00a0After his return in 1947, he played an instrumental role in establishing the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>At PRL, he conducted groundbreaking research in cosmic rays and space physics.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Community Service Centre:<\/strong>\u00a0He founded the<strong>\u00a0Community Science Centre<\/strong>\u00a0(later renamed Vikram A. Sarabhai Community Science Centre) under the auspices of the Nehru Foundation for Development.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>ISC:<\/strong>\u00a0He served as the President of the Physics Section of the Indian Science Congress in 1962.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Atomic Energy Commission:\u00a0<\/strong>Vikram Sarabhai was appointed Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission under the Government of India in\u00a0<strong>1966<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>ISRO:<\/strong>\u00a0He served as the Chairman of the Indian National Committee for Space Research (<strong>INCOSPAR<\/strong>) from 1962 to 1969 and later served as the first chairman of the\u00a0<strong>Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)\u00a0<\/strong>from 1969 to 1971.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>IAEA:<\/strong>\u00a0He served as the President of the General Conference of the\u00a0<strong>International Atomic Energy Agency<\/strong>\u00a0in 1970.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>U.N. Conference on 'Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy\u2019:\u00a0<\/strong>He served as the vice-president of the Fourth U.N. Conference on 'Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy' in 1971.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Contributions of Vikram Sarabhai<\/h2>\r\n<p>Vikram Sarabhai made a number of significant contributions to science and technology, particularly in the fields of space and nuclear technology.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Indian Space Program<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Foundation of ISRO:<\/strong>\u00a0One of the most notable accomplishments of Vikram Sarabhai was the establishment of ISRO.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>After the\u00a0<strong>Russian Sputnik launch<\/strong>, he successfully persuaded the government of the significance of a space programme for a developing country like India.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>As a result,\u00a0<strong>INCOSPAR<\/strong>\u00a0was established in 1962 and later renamed ISRO.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>First rocket launching station:<\/strong>\u00a0Vikram Sarabhai, along with the support of\u00a0<strong>Homi Jehangir Bhabha,<\/strong>\u00a0set up the first rocket launching station (Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station) in 1963 in India at Thumba near\u00a0<strong>Thiruvananthapuram.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>SITE Project:<\/strong>\u00a0As a result of Vikram Sarabhai's dialogue with NASA in 1966, the\u00a0<strong>Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE)<\/strong>\u00a0was launched between July 1975 and July 1976.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Pioneer of the first Indian satellite:<\/strong>\u00a0Vikram Sarabhai began work on a project to build and launch an Indian satellite.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>As a result, the first Indian satellite, Aryabhata, was launched into orbit from a Russian Cosmodrome in\u00a0<strong>1975<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Nuclear Energy<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Atomic Energy Commission:\u00a0<\/strong>Vikram Sarabhai served as\u00a0<strong>Chairman\u00a0<\/strong>of the Atomic Energy Commissionafter the death of Homi Jehangir Bhabha.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>He was largely responsible for the establishment and development of India's nuclear power plants, carrying on Bhabha's work in the field of nuclear research.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) project:<\/strong>\u00a0He laid the groundwork for indigenous nuclear technology development for defence purposes.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>He started the\u00a0<strong>Fast Breeder Test Reactor<\/strong>\u00a0(FBTR) project in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Institutes Established by Vikram Sarabhai<\/h2>\r\n<p>Vikram Sarabhai was a visionary and established many institutions in the field of science and technology, which have benefited India in various fields.
