The nuclear submarines may or may not carry nuclear weapons. The history of nuclear submarines goes back to the 1950s when the US first developed it in 1954, named<strong>\u00a0USS Nautilus<\/strong>. Soon it was followed by Russia and subsequently by other naval powers such as France, Britain and China. India too started engaging in nuclear submarine technologies, when it leased a\u00a0<strong>Charlie I<\/strong>\u00a0class SSN from the USSR in 1987 as well as developing its indigenous SSBN,\u00a0<strong>INS Arihant<\/strong>\u00a0in 2016. Due to several advancements over conventional submarines, particularly for strategic imperatives, nuclear submarines are very crucial for India\u2019s defence capabilities.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Nuclear Submarines Features<\/h2>\r\n<p>The power source of nuclear submarines is\u00a0<strong>nuclear propulsion<\/strong>\u00a0fired by the\u00a0<strong>fission of uranium fuel\u00a0<\/strong>in varied concentrations. This power source makes nuclear submarines more advanced as well as limits their stealth ability in comparison to conventional diesel-powered submarines.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Technology:<\/strong>\u00a0Nuclear submarines generate electricity either by powering electric motors connected to the propeller shaft or relying on the reactor heat to produce steam that drives turbines.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Fuel:\u00a0<\/strong>Reactors used in submarines typically use highly enriched fuel, generally greater than 20%, so that they can operate longer between refuellings.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Backup:\u00a0<\/strong>Generally, nuclear submarines also contain diesel generators as a backup power system, in emergencies.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Nuclear Submarine Advantages<\/h2>\r\n<p>The following are the advantages of nuclear submarines over conventional submarines:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Endurance:\u00a0<\/strong>Submarines can carry nuclear fuel for up to 30 years of operation, only limited by the food supply for the crew members and maintenance of the vessel.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Speed and Power:<\/strong>\u00a0Nuclear submarines are significantly faster than conventional diesel-electric submarines, achieving speeds above 30 knots.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Strategic imperatives:\u00a0<\/strong>They can carry nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles such as SLBMs (Submarine-launched ballistic missiles) serving the strategic interests of a country.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>When a nuclear submarine carries nuclear warheads, it is called\u00a0<strong>SSBN\u00a0<\/strong>(Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear).<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Otherwise, it is called\u00a0<strong>SSN\u00a0<\/strong>(Ship Submersible Nuclear), which is a nuclear-powered attack submarine.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Nuclear Submarines Disadvantages<\/h2>\r\n<p>The following are the disadvantages of nuclear submarines:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Large size:\u00a0<\/strong>The major disadvantage of nuclear submarines is that their large size limits their access to shallow waters, where they can be spotted more easily.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Expensive:\u00a0<\/strong>Nuclear submarines are much more expensive to build, operate, and maintain than conventional submarines.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>They require specialised facilities, equipment, and personnel to handle the nuclear reactors and the nuclear waste.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Easily detectable:\u00a0<\/strong>Nuclear submarines release heat into the water, which can make them detectable by\u00a0<strong>infrared sensors\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0<strong>thermal imaging.<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>They also have to cool down their reactors periodically, which can create a trail of warm water behind them.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Nuclear submarines generate steam noise from their turbines, which can be heard by\u00a0<strong>sonar\u00a0<\/strong>or\u00a0<strong>hydrophones.\u00a0<\/strong>This can compromise their\u00a0<strong>stealth\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>expose<\/strong>\u00a0them to enemy attacks.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Risk of accidents: Nuclear submarines can be harmful if they break, as they have nuclear reactors.<\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Many nuclear submarine accidents have happened in the past, sinking the submarines, killing the crew, and spreading radiation in the ocean like the<strong>\u00a0K-19 incident\u00a0<\/strong>in 1961, the\u00a0<strong>USS Thresher disaster\u00a0<\/strong>in 1963, and the\u00a0<strong>Kursk explosion<\/strong>\u00a0in 2000.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Nuclear Submarines in India<\/h2>\r\n<p>India recognised early on that naval supremacy would be crucial to protect its national security interests in the\u00a0<strong>Indian Ocean region<\/strong>. After seeing the threats from nuclear submarines in neighbouring waters, India took determined steps to close this capability gap.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Nuclear-Powered Attack Submarines (SSNs)<\/h3>\r\n<p>India's first exposure to nuclear submarine operations came in the late 1980s on lease from the Soviet Union Navy. The<strong>\u00a0Charlie-I class SSN INS Chakra<\/strong>\u00a0served in the Indian Navy from\u00a0<strong>1987 to 1991.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Significance:<\/strong>\u00a0Though small and less capable than contemporary nuclear submarines, Chakra allowed the Indian Navy to study nuclear propulsion technology and maintenance practices.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>This experience paved the way for India's own SSN and SSBN programs.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>INS Chakra-II Lease:<\/strong>\u00a0In 2012, India signed a $1 billion deal to lease a more modern\u00a0<strong>Akula-II<\/strong>\u00a0class SSN from Russia for 10 years. This 8,140-tonne submarine,<strong>\u00a0INS Chakra-II,<\/strong>\u00a0joined the Indian fleet in 2012.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Features:\u00a0<\/strong>The INS Chakra-II is powered by a 190 MW nuclear reactor, can reach a depth of 600 meters and can travel at speeds of over 30 knots.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>With\u00a0<\/strong>contemporary sensors, weapons systems, andnuclear-tipped missiles<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0this submarine significantly enhanced India\u2019s underwater attack capabilities.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>INS Chakra-III:<\/strong>\u00a0Itis an Akula-class nuclear-powered attack submarine that India has leased from Russia. It is expected to be delivered to the Indian Navy by 2025.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Nuclear Ballistic Missile Submarines (SSBN)<\/h3>\r\n<p>India presently has one nuclear-powered ballistic submarine (SSBN) named\u00a0<strong>INS Arihant (S2).\u00a0<\/strong>S3 (INS Arighat) is in the developing phase. India\u2019s SSBNs are under the direct control of the PMO and the Strategic Nuclear Command, which oversee their construction, testing and status.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>ATV Project:\u00a0<\/strong>The Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project was launched in the 1980s, and marked India\u2019s place in designing and building nuclear-powered submarines, leading to the creation of the\u00a0<strong>Arihant-class submarines<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Arihant Class SSBNs (S2):\u00a0<\/strong>India's first indigenous nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) designed and developed under the ATV program.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Launched in 2009 and commissioned in 2016 features a double-hull with advanced sensors, periscopes, and various weapon systems.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Power<\/strong>: 1 CLWR-B1 Compact Light-water reactor of 83 MW.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Speed:<\/strong>\u00a024 knots (submerged) and 15 knots (on the surface).<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Range:\u00a0<\/strong>Unlimited days<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Armaments:<\/strong>\u00a0It can carry either 12\u00a0<strong>K-15<\/strong>\u00a0(Sagarika) missiles with a 750 Kms range or 4\u00a0<strong>K-4<\/strong>\u00a0missiles with a 3500 Km range.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>K-4 is a variant of Agni-III, a land-based ballistic missile, and has a range of about 3,500 km.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>K-15 is a variant of Shaurya, another land-based ballistic missile, and has a range of 750 to 1,500 km, depending on the warhead size.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>INS Arighat (S3):<\/strong>\u00a0It is an upgraded variant of the Arihant-class submarine. It is the second nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine being built by India under the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>It can accommodate more K4 missiles than S2.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>It is ready and undergoing advanced sea trials, and will be commissioned soon.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>S4:<\/strong>\u00a0The project for S4, the third Arihant-class SSBN, was launched in 2023.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>S4 is being built to accommodate\u00a0<strong>eight K-4 or twenty-four K-15 SLBMs<\/strong>, more than that by S2 and S3.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Future SSBN programs<\/strong>: India plans to have four Arihant-class SSBNs and at least two S-5-class SSBNs.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>The S-5-class SSBNs will complement the S-4 and S-4* SSBNs, which carry intermediate-range SLBMs.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>The S-5-class SSBNs, which will have intercontinental range and higher capability, are crucial for India\u2019s nuclear deterrence and triad and should be developed and commissioned as soon as possible.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Nuclear Submarines in India Significance<\/h2>\r\n<p>For India, expanding its submarine fleet with nuclear-powered vessels helps safeguard national security priorities.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Completing India\u2019s Nuclear Triad: Nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) such as INS Arihant provide survivable second strike capability by securing massive retaliation against any nuclear coercion towards India.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Lower Import Dependency:<\/strong>\u00a0The development and deployment of indigenous nuclear submarines reduce India's reliance on imported defence equipment.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Strategic Autonomy:\u00a0<\/strong>The presence of nuclear-powered submarines in India's naval arsenal serves as a significant deterrent against potential adversaries, contributing to the country's overall strategic deterrence posture.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Nuclear Submarines in India Challenges<\/h2>\r\n<p>India's nuclear submarine program faces several challenges, including budgetary constraints, delays, and institutional ad-hocism.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><strong>Fleet strength:<\/strong>\u00a0With\u00a0<strong>4 larger SSBNs\u00a0<\/strong>like Arihant, India needs 3-4 more nuclear ballistic missile submarines for assured second-strike capability against both adversaries.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Additionally,\u00a0<strong>6-8 attack submarines (SSNs)\u00a0<\/strong>would be required to protect the SSBN fleet.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Lack of indigenous SSN:\u00a0<\/strong>India does not have any indigenous SSN design or technology, and relies on leasing\u00a0<strong>Russian SSNs<\/strong>\u00a0for training and operational purposes.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>While the leased\u00a0<strong>INS Chakra<\/strong>\u00a0provided much-needed capability boosts, India always intended to develop indigenous nuclear submarines.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Build period:<\/strong>\u00a0The INS Arihant project took over 20 years from inception to completion of a deterrent patrol.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Future platforms will have shorter development timelines due to learning effects.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li><strong>Shorter range:<\/strong>\u00a0To enhance stealth, SSBNs need to operate from distant waters.\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>So next-generation SLBMs would require a\u00a0<strong>6000-8000 km<\/strong> range to effectively deter regional
