He was the heir of Vishwanathpant Sidhaye, a Deshmukh from Konkan, who held the right to collect revenue from multiple villages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His family eventually settled in Pune, where his father served as the treasurer of Bapu Gokhale, a general during the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Third <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/anglo-maratha-wars\/\" target=\"_blank\">Anglo-Maratha War<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gopal Hari Deshmukh received his education at the Poona English Medium School, which provided him with a foundation for his future career in public service.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gopal Hari Deshmukh Career<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gopal Hari Deshmukh studied at the Poona English Medium School and began his career as a government translator, later he served as a judge in Ahmedabad and Ratlam in 1867. He held various important positions in the British Indian judicial system, including Assistant Inam Commissioner, Joint Judge of Nasik High Court, and Member of the Law Council. He also served as Diwan for the princely state of Ratlam and retired as a sessions judge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recognized for his service, Deshmukh received the titles<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 'Justice of Peace'<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and 'Raobahadur' from the colonial government.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 1880, he became a member of the Governor General's Council and served as a judge. His decision to wear a handspun khadi to the Delhi Durbar in 1876 reflected his support for national self-reliance.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gopal Hari Deshmukh Literary Works<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gopal Hari Deshmukh authored 35 books on various topics including religion, society, economics, politics, history, and literature. His writings have been widely studied and referenced by other scholars. He was a key figure in establishing the periodicals Gyan Prakash, Indu Prakash, and Lokahitawadi.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gopal Hari Deshmukh Religious Ideas<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lokhitwadi believed that religion should be approached with rational thought. He emphasized that Hindus had not yet begun to think independently, stating, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\"The mind is the true sacred book, superior to all written scriptures.\"\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Religious adaptability:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> According to him, if religion did not sanction social reform then he advocated that religion itself be changed, as what was laid down in the scriptures need not necessarily be of contemporary relevance.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Scriptures:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Vedas, in his view, were composed by rishi who were great saints and scholars but not divine beings. Avatars were seen as heroic figures, virtuous and brave, with the belief in reincarnation emerging only through the Puranas.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Reform agenda:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In the religious sphere, the reform movements focused on addressing issues such as idolatry, polytheism, religious superstitions, and the exploitation by priests.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gopal Hari Deshmukh Social Reforms in Maharashtra<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gopal Hari Deshmukh strongly advocated for women's emancipation and education. He opposed harmful practices like child marriage, the dowry system, polygamy, sati, widow hair-cutting, and the prohibition of widow remarriage, all of which he saw as detrimental to women's rights and society.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Deshmukh also criticized the caste system and challenged Hindu religious orthodoxy, which style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gopal Hari Deshmukh Social Reforms in Gujarat<\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gopal Hari Deshmukh played a key role in establishing the <\/span><b>Gujarati Prarthana Samaj<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the <\/span><b>Gujarati Remarriage Society. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He contributed to the Gujarati-English journal <\/span><b>Hitechchu,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> further influencing reformist thought in Gujarat.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He also established an institute for
