This rigorous training regimen, conducted at the prestigious Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, is designed to mold individuals into skilled administrators who can tackle the complex challenges of governance in India.

The Bharat Darshan and District Training modules provide on-field learning opportunities, while the academic sessions prepare probationers for the challenges ahead. There are exams and grades during the training, and probationers must follow the Probation Rules. The four-month foundation course at LBSNAA is a mandatory training program for all new recruits to the All India Services and Central Services. The course is designed to foster camaraderie and cooperation among different services by building esprit de corps. The following table provides information on the training of other prominent services after the Foundation Course at LBSNAA:

The training at LBSNAA takes place for a duration of 2 years. It is rigorous and aims to prepare IAS officers for the diverse and challenging roles they will play in the Indian bureaucracy. It equips them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and values to serve effectively in various administrative positions and contribute to the development of the nation.
The training program at LBSNAA begins with a Foundation Course, which is common to all civil services officers, including the IAS. This course lasts for about 3 months and is designed to provide officers with a broad understanding of various subjects such as Indian polity, history, economics, and current affairs.
After completing the Foundation Course, IAS probationers are divided into groups and taken on a tour of India also known as Bharat Darshan, to experience the country's diverse culture and heritage. They meet dignitaries such as the President of India and are attached to different executive, defense, and administrative institutions to gain a deeper understanding of their work. A week-long stint at the Lok Sabha Secretariat (Bureau of Parliamentary Studies) in Delhi is also part of Bharat Darshan.
Probationers return to LBSNAA for a 15-week academic module, which includes courses on policy making, land management, soft skills, project management, national security, e-governance, and other topics. A typical day for a probationer starts at 6 am with an exercise drill, followed by academic sessions. Evening hours and holidays are dedicated to cultural activities, trekking, adventure sports, horse riding, volunteering, cross-country runs, and other activities.
Probationers then spend nearly a year in district training, where they study the administrative setup of a particular district by being a part of it. This gives them first-hand experience of developmental issues, challenges, solutions, and implementation.
In Phase 2, probationers share their learning experiences from Phase 1 and district training. They articulate and discuss various developmental challenges and issues, and attend special sessions with distinguished subject matter experts.
After completing their induction training, probationers join their respective deputations. However, in recent years, it was recommended that all IAS officers should have some experience of working in the Central Secretariat. As a result, all IAS probationers are now given the title of Assistant Secretaries and work under the respective Joint Secretaries on a central deputation for a period of a few months.
