Jog Falls is the second highest plunge waterfall in India, formed by the Sharavathi River in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. The river plunges from a height of about 253 metres (830 feet), creating one of India’s most spectacular waterfalls, especially during the southwest monsoon. Also known as Gersoppa Falls, Jog Falls is an excellent example of river erosion in the Western Ghats and is closely associated with the Sharavathi Hydroelectric Project, one of India’s earliest major hydroelectric projects.

Jog Falls Formation

Jog Falls was formed by the combined action of tectonic uplift and river erosion. The Sharavathi River flows westwards from the Mysore (Deccan) Plateau towards the Arabian Sea. On reaching the steep western edge of the Western Ghats, the river suddenly drops about 253 metres, forming a plunge waterfall. Over thousands of years, the force of the falling water eroded the rocks at the base, creating a deep gorge, while the hard rocks of the Western Ghats helped preserve the steep cliff. This combination of a sharp escarpment and continuous river erosion gave rise to Jog Falls.

Jog Falls exhibits several distinctive physical characteristics that make it one of India’s most remarkable waterfalls.

• It has a vertical drop of about 253 metres, making it the second highest plunge waterfall in India.
• The waterfall is divided into four distinct streams – Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket, each displaying a unique pattern of descent.
• It is carved into the hard crystalline rocks of the Western Ghats, forming a steep cliff and a deep rocky gorge.
• The surrounding landscape consists of rugged hills, dense evergreen forests and narrow valleys typical of the Western Ghats.
• Seasonal variations in rainfall cause significant changes in the volume and appearance of the waterfall.

River and Hydroelectric Significance

Jog Falls is closely associated with the Sharavathi River Basin and hydroelectric power generation in Karnataka.

• The Sharavathi River originates near Ambutirtha in Shivamogga district and drains into the Arabian Sea near Honnavar.
• The Mahatma Gandhi Hydroelectric Station, commissioned in 1948, was among India’s earliest major hydroelectric power stations and utilised the river’s steep gradient near Jog Falls.
• The Linganamakki Dam, constructed upstream in the 1960s, created a large reservoir that supplies water to the Sharavathi Hydroelectric Project, one of Karnataka’s largest hydroelectric power stations.
• Today, water releases from the reservoir regulate the discharge over Jog Falls during the non-monsoon months, while the waterfall reaches its peak flow during the southwest monsoon.
