The Greater Himalayas, also known as the Himadri, are the northernmost and highest mountain range of the Himalayan system. Stretching across northern India and neighbouring countries, the Greater Himalayas contain some of the world’s highest peaks, including Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga. These mountains are covered with permanent snow and glaciers, making them the primary source of many perennial rivers in the Indian subcontinent.

The Greater Himalayas extend from the Indus River Gorge in the northwest to the Brahmaputra River Gorge in the east. In India, they pass through the Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.
This mountain range forms the northern boundary of the Indian subcontinent and continues through Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet (China).
Formation of the Greater Himalayas
The Greater Himalayas (Himadri) were formed due to the collision of the Indian Plate with the Eurasian Plate, resulting in the uplift of the Earth’s crust into the world’s highest mountain range.
- Started Around 50 Million Years Ago: Formation began during the Cenozoic Era after the northward movement of the Indian Plate.
- Plate Collision: The Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate, compressing and uplifting sedimentary rocks.
- Young Fold Mountains: The Greater Himalayas are classified as young fold mountains because they were formed by tectonic folding.
- Tectonic Activity: The region remains geologically active, leading to frequent earthquakes and gradual mountain uplift.
- Rock Composition: The range mainly consists of metamorphic and crystalline rocks, including granite, gneiss, and schist.
- Continuous Uplift: The Himalayas continue to rise by a few millimetres each year due to ongoing plate movement.

- Highest Himalayan Range: Average elevation exceeds 6,000 metres, with many peaks rising above 8,000 metres.
- Length and Width: Extends for about 2,400 km with an average width of 25-40 km.
- Permanent Snow Cover: Most peaks remain snow-covered throughout the year, giving the range its distinctive appearance.
- Rugged Terrain: Characterized by steep slopes, sharp ridges, and deep river gorges formed by erosion.
- Extensive Glaciers: Home to major glaciers such as Gangotri, Yamunotri, Siachen, and Zemu, which feed perennial rivers.
- Crystalline Rock Structure: Composed mainly of granite, gneiss, schist, and other metamorphic rocks, making the range geologically stable yet tectonically active.
- Source of Major Rivers: Many important rivers, including the Ganga, Yamuna, Indus, and Brahmaputra, originate from glaciers in this range.
- Sparse Human Settlements: Harsh climate, rugged topography, and high altitude result in low population density and limited habitation.

Rivers Originating from the Greater Himalayas

- Birch Forests: Silver birch grows near the tree line and is adapted to cold climatic conditions.
- Juniper Shrubs: Hardy shrubs commonly found in rocky and dry alpine regions.
- Medicinal Plants: Rich in herbs such as Kutki, Jatamansi, Atis, Kuth, and Yarsagumba, widely used in traditional medicine.

- Himalayan Tahr: A wild mountain goat with strong hooves for climbing steep cliffs.
