About Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar
- Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, originally named Ishwar Chandra Bandyopadhyay, was born on 26 September 1820 in West Bengal and later earned the title “Vidyasagar” (Ocean of Knowledge) in 1839 due to his deep understanding of Sanskrit and philosophy.
- Despite facing extreme poverty in childhood, he excelled in studies, cleared his law examination in 1839, and completed his education from Sanskrit College, Kolkata (1841) with expertise in subjects like grammar, literature, Vedanta, Smriti, and astronomy.
- At a young age, he joined Fort William College as the Head of the Sanskrit Department, showing his early brilliance in academics and administration.
- He also supported Michael Madhusudan Dutta, helping him pursue studies abroad and inspiring him to write in Bengali, and was fondly called “Dayasagar” (Ocean of Kindness) for his generosity.
- As an educationist, he brought major reforms while serving at Sanskrit College, especially as Principal (1851-1858), where he promoted equal access to education for all, regardless of caste or gender.
- He opened the doors of education to lower castes, introduced modern subjects like English, science, and mathematics, and reformed the system by starting monthly exams, tuition fees, Sunday holidays, and summer vacations.
- He established around 20 model schools across regions like Hooghly, Midnapore, Burdwan, and Nadia, and played a key role in improving the Bengali education system.
- As a linguist, he simplified the Bengali alphabet into a more structured form and wrote the famous book Borno Porichoy, which is still used to learn the language.
- He was a leading figure of the Bengal Renaissance, contributing greatly to Bengali literature and intellectual growth through his writings and reforms.
- As a social reformer, he worked tirelessly for women’s rights, especially promoting widow remarriage, which led to the passing of the Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act, 1856.
- Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar strongly opposed harmful practices like child marriage and Kulin Brahmin polygamy, and even encouraged his own son to marry a widow to set an example.
- He established around 35 schools for girls, aiming to make women educated, independent, and empowered, and worked towards removing social inequalities.
- His reforms also highlighted the harsh realities faced by widows and challenged orthodox social norms, bringing gradual change within society rather than creating separate systems.
- He contributed through many important works such as Betaal Panchavinsati, Banglar Itihaas, Shakuntala, and Bhrantivilaas, along with reformist writings like Bidhobabivah and Bahubivah.
- Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar is remembered as the “Father of Modern Bengali Prose” and a key figure who laid the foundation for social awakening and cultural nationalism.
- In his later life, he worked among the Santhal community in present-day Jharkhand, setting up schools, literacy centres, and free medical services.
- Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar passed away on 29 July 1891, and his life remains a powerful example of knowledge, compassion, and social reform dedicated to nation-building.
