Indian Railways achieved a landmark in cross border freight transport by operating the first ever Direct Commercial Container Freight Train from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar Customs Yard Nepal. The train carried a consignment of canola in 40 wagons under the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol.

A Direct Rail Freight System improves cargo movement by reducing delays, handling and transportation costs while creating an efficient cross border logistics network.

  • The revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol allows containerised cargo to move directly to Biratnagar without unloading and reloading at the border, reducing delays, cargo handling and the risk of damage.
  • The service became possible after implementation of the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol and the revised Letter of Exchange signed in November 2025, enabling seamless end to end rail movement of freight.
  • The freight rake was booked on 19 July, reached Biratnagar on 23 July and was released after unloading on 25 July, demonstrating efficient cross border cargo movement through rail.

  • Broad Gauge Rail Connectivity: The Jogbani-Biratnagar broad gauge rail link, inaugurated in June 2023 laid the foundation of the direct commercial rail freight.

Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) is India’s dedicated railway network for freight transport, including Direct Commercial Container Freight Train.

  • Project Purpose: The Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) separates freight trains from passenger trains, reducing railway congestion and allowing faster, safer and more efficient movement of heavy goods.
  • Project Background: The DFC project was conceived in 2005 and approved by the Union Cabinet in 2008 to strengthen India’s freight transport system and improve railway efficiency.
  • Implementation Agency: The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), a Special Purpose Vehicle under the Ministry of Railways, plans, builds, operates, maintains and develops the freight corridors.
