• Who are Vokkaligas: The Vokkaligas are a major agrarian (farming-based) community mainly found in the state of Karnataka. Traditionally, they are known as farmers, landowners, and cultivators, and their identity is closely linked to agriculture and rural life.
• Meaning of the term :The word “Vokkaliga” comes from the Kannada language, meaning “one who tills the land” or “cultivator/householder.” This shows their strong connection with farming and land-based occupations.
• Origin and nature of the community: Vokkaliga is not just a caste but also an occupation-based category, which over time developed into a social and ethnic identity. Historically, they have been associated with agriculture, land ownership, and rural economy.
• Historical background and roots: It is believed that some ancient dynasties like the Rashtrakutas and Western Gangas may have been of Vokkaliga origin, which reflects their deep historical presence in South India.
• Geographical distribution: The Vokkaligas are mainly concentrated in South Karnataka, especially in regions like Bangalore, Mysore, Mandya, Hassan, Kolar, and Chikmagalur. In the former princely state of Mysore, they were one of the largest communities.
• Role as warriors and cultivators : Traditionally, Vokkaligas were both warriors and farmers, which gave them strong social standing. Their control over land and resources helped them gain economic strength and local influence.
• Population and social presence : Vokkaligas make up around 15% of Karnataka’s population, making them a significant demographic group with strong influence in both rural and urban areas.
