The origin of the Dahi Handi Utsav tradition is linked to the childhood stories of Krishna in Gokul and Vrindavan, where Krishna and his cowherd companions reportedly formed human pyramids to reach curd and butter pots hung high by village women.

• Human pyramids: Govinda Pathaks generally form pyramids of up to nine tiers. Participants train for weeks, with stronger members forming lower layers and lighter participants reaching the top.
• Handi ritual: The suspended clay pot traditionally contains curd, butter, milk, fruits and water. The top participant breaks it, causing its contents to spill over the pyramid and surrounding crowd.
• Govinda Pathaks: The participating groups are known as Govinda Pathaks or mandals. They practise collectively before the festival to improve coordination and pyramid formation.
• Public celebration: Dahi Handi events feature large gatherings, music, dancing and cheering. Spectators traditionally chant “Ala re ala, Govinda ala” during the pyramid attempts.
• Maharashtra celebrations: Maharashtra is the main centre of Dahi Handi celebrations, with major events held in Mumbai, Thane, Pune and the Konkan region.
• Other Indian regions: The tradition is also observed in Gujarat and Goa, while related forms are celebrated in other parts of India during Krishna Janmashtami.
