Vikramshila Setu is a major road bridge across the Ganga near Bhagalpur in Bihar. It connects the southern and northern banks and serves as a vital route between Bhagalpur, Banka, Jharkhand and the Kosi-Seemanchal region. The bridge was opened in 2001. The Vikramshila Bridge is currently under attention due to recent structural collapse.

Why is Vikramshila Setu in News?

Vikramshila Setu Bhagalpur News is important after a portion of the bridge collapsed in May 2026. The incident disrupted road connectivity across the Ganga. Authorities had accelerated permanent reconstruction work and planned a complete three month traffic closure from August 29, 2026. A Bailey Bridge was installed for emergency traffic movement. 

However, Its proposed removal from August 28 has now been postponed by four weeks due to the Ganga’s high water level. The revised repair date is yet to be announced.

Vikramshila Setu has historically provided the crucial land connection across the wide Ganga near Bhagalpur and Naugachhia.

• Location: The bridge is located across the Ganga River near Bhagalpur City of Bihar.
• Connectivity: The bridge runs from Barari Ghat on Bhagalpur’s south bank to Naugachhia on the north bank. Vikramshila Setu Connects Bhagalpur with Purnia and Katihar.
• Bridge length: The Vikramshila Setu Length is about 4.4 km. It is a two lane bridge linking NH 33 and NH 31 across the Ganga.
• Regional importance: Vikramshila Setu Bihar is a lifeline for Bhagalpur, Banka and Jharkhand on one side and Navgachhia, Katihar, Purnea, Saharsa and Madhepura on the other.
• Historical significance: The bridge takes its name from Vikramashila Mahavihara. King Dharmapala of Pala Dynasty established this ancient centre of learning between 783 and 820 A.D.
• Vikramshila Setu New Bridge: A four lane Vikramshila Setu New Bridge was approved parallel to the existing structure. Its foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 21, 2020, at ₹1110.23 crore.
• Rail cum road project: A 24 km Vikramshila-Kataria rail-cum-road bridge was approved in June 2018. The project involves ₹4,379.01 crore and connects railway stations on both sides of the Ganga.

Vikramshila Setu Collapse

The Vikramshila Setu Collapse in 2026 severely affected movement between Bhagalpur and Naugachhia and created longer travel routes across southern Bihar and the Kosi-Seemanchal region.

• Collapse incident: Structural failure began on May 4, 2026 splitting the bridge into two sections.
• Damaged portion: Around 34 metres of the bridge structure fell into the Ganga. Authorities immediately stopped regular traffic after the incident to prevent further risk.
• Immediate response: The administration arranged a Bailey bridge as an emergency measure. Only light vehicles were permitted to use the temporary crossing.
• Repair assistance: The state government sought assistance from the Indian Army and Border Roads Organisation to accelerate restoration and permanent reconstruction of the damaged section.
• Current Status: As of August 2026, the Bailey Bridge removal has been postponed by four weeks due to the Ganga’s high water level. The Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation Limited has not yet fixed a revised repair date.
