The Duleep Trophy 2026 is being played from 23 August to 10 September 2026, with six zonal teams competing in the first-class tournament. The final between East Zone and South Zone is being held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. The tournament has also drawn attention to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who became the youngest Duleep Trophy half-centurion.

About Duleep Trophy 2026

The Duleep Trophy 2026 is India’s premier inter-zonal first-class cricket tournament, organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). 

• The 63rd edition is being played from 23 August to 10 September 2026.
• It features six zonal teams – North, South, East, West, Central and North East.
• The 2026 edition follows a knockout format in which East Zone, North Zone, North East Zone and West Zone contested the quarter-finals, while Central Zone and South Zone received direct entry into the semi-finals.
• The tournament began at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, with the final between East Zone and South Zone being played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, from 6 to 10 September 2026. 
• Central Zone entered the tournament as the defending champions, while East Zone reached the final after defeating Central Zone by four wickets in the semi-final.
• South Zone reached the final after defeating North Zone by seven wickets in the second semi-final.

The tournament provides an important platform for assessing players in red-ball cricket, particularly for their technique, temperament, consistency and suitability for higher levels of domestic and international cricket.

Duleep Trophy 2026: History and Origin

The Duleep Trophy was introduced in the 1961-62 season and was named after Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji, an India-born cricketer who represented England in Test cricket and was the nephew of Ranjitsinhji, after whom the Ranji Trophy is named. 

• The tournament was originally conceived as an inter-zonal first-class competition, bringing together leading domestic cricketers from different regions of India.
• The inaugural edition consisted of five zones – North, South, East, West and Central, with West Zone becoming the first champion after defeating South Zone in the final. 
• The tournament has undergone several format changes over the decades, including periods when teams were organised as India Red, India Blue and India Green, rather than traditional zonal sides.
• The traditional zonal structure was later restored, with the North East Zone added to create the present six-zone structure and provide greater representation to players from the northeastern region.
• West Zone is the most successful team in Duleep Trophy history, with 19 titles, making it the leading side in the competition’s championship record.

Duleep Trophy 2026: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Makes History

The Duleep Trophy 2026 witnessed a record-breaking performance by 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi of East Zone. He became the youngest batter to score a half-century in Duleep Trophy history, scoring 92 runs off 81 balls in the semi-final against Central Zone. He also became the youngest player to captain a side in the tournament after taking over as East Zone’s stand-in captain following Ishan Kishan’s injury.

• The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is India’s premier domestic T20 competition, focusing on the shortest major format of professional cricket.
