Mocha is a historic port city on Yemen’s western coast along the Red Sea. Its location has given it both historical commercial importance and growing strategic importance in the current conflict.

• Mocha is located roughly 80 km from the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
• Mocha was historically an important centre of the global coffee trade, and the name “mocha” became associated with coffee because Yemeni coffee was exported through the port.

The strategic importance of the area today, however, comes mainly from its location along Yemen’s western coast and its proximity to Bab el-Mandeb.

What Happened in Mocha?

• The Houthis launched an offensive to capture Mocha, which was under the control of forces supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government.
• After heavy fighting, government forces withdrew from Mocha, and the Houthis captured the city on September 10, 2026. The Yemeni government described the withdrawal as a tactical move to regroup.
• After the fall of Mocha, government forces moved south towards Dhubab, a coastal area closer to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, while Houthi forces advanced towards the Hanish Islands in the Red Sea.
