About Cotton
Cotton is a natural, plant-based fibre obtained from the seeds of cotton plants, mainly belonging to the Gossypium genus. It is an important cash crop and industrial raw material, supporting farmers, textile industries, employment and international trade.
- Botanical source: Cotton fibre is obtained from the seed hairs (lint) of plants belonging to the genus Gossypium.
- Major species: Four main cultivated species are:
- Gossypium hirsutum – Upland cotton; accounts for the largest share of global production.
- Gossypium barbadense – Egyptian/Pima cotton; known for long and fine fibres.
- Gossypium arboreum – Indigenous/Desi cotton.
- Gossypium herbaceum – Desi cotton.
- Major uses: Cotton is primarily used in textile and clothing manufacturing, while cottonseed is used for oil extraction and animal feed.
- Economic importance: It provides income and employment across the farm-to-fabric value chain, including cultivation, ginning, spinning, weaving, processing and garment manufacturing.
- Climate: Cotton generally requires a warm growing season, adequate moisture during growth and relatively dry conditions during boll opening and harvesting.
- Soil: It grows well in deep, fertile and well-drained soils. In India, the black cotton soils (Regur soils) of the Deccan region are particularly suitable.
- Water requirement: Cotton is relatively drought-tolerant, but irrigation can significantly improve productivity in areas with inadequate or irregular rainfall.
- Major producing countries: Important cotton producers include China, India, Brazil, the United States and Pakistan.
- India: India is among the world’s major cotton-producing countries and has a large cotton-based textile industry.
- By-products: Cotton cultivation generates cottonseed, linters and cotton stalks, which can be used for oil, animal feed, cellulose and other industrial purposes.
- Global trade: Cotton is an important agricultural commodity in international trade, linking cotton-producing farmers with global textile and apparel markets.
