History of Indian Air Force Day

The Indian Air Force was established on October 8, 1932, during the British colonial period. Its first operational squadron, No. 1 Squadron, was formed in 1933.

After Independence in 1947, the IAF played an important role in several military operations and conflicts, including the 1947-48 Jammu and Kashmir operations, the 1965 and 1971 wars, the Kargil conflict and subsequent counter-terrorism operations.

Over the years, the IAF has evolved into a modern air force with capabilities covering air defence, air superiority, strategic airlift, surveillance, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
