The Budhabalanga River is an important river of northern Odisha. It originates from Similipal Hills, course through Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts, tributaries, drainage basin and mouth near Balaramgadi in Odisha.

What is the Budhabalanga River?

The Budhabalanga River, also known as the Balanga River, is an east-flowing river in Odisha. It drains parts of Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts before emptying into the Bay of Bengal.

  • Origin: Similipal hills in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha.
  • Length: Approximately 175-199 km, depending on the source and measurement.
  • Mouth: Bay of Bengal near Balaramgadi in Balasore district.
  • Major cities and towns along its course: Baripada and surrounding settlements in Mayurbhanj.
  • Major associated waterfall: Barehipani Falls in Similipal.

Course of the Budhabalanga River

The Budhabalanga originates in the Similipal hills and flows through the uplands of Mayurbhanj before entering the coastal plains of Balasore district.

  • The upper course passes through the hilly region associated with Similipal.
  • The river flows towards the Baripada region, the headquarters of Mayurbhanj district.
  • It then crosses the plains of Balasore district.
  • Finally, it drains into the Bay of Bengal near Balaramgadi.

Tributaries of the Budhabalanga River

The Budhabalanga is joined by several streams that drain the Similipal hills and surrounding uplands.

  • Sone (Sono): An important tributary in the lower basin.
  • Katra: A tributary associated with the middle course.
  • Gangahar: Drains parts of the region around Baripada.
  • Palpala and Chipat: Streams associated with the Similipal hills.
  • Sunei and Kalo: Rivers associated with irrigation and water-resource development in the wider basin.

Budhabalanga River Basin

The Odisha Department of Water Resources groups the Budhabalanga and Jambhira river systems into a combined basin for water-resource planning.

  • Total area of the combined basin: Approximately 6,691 sq. km.
  • Area within Odisha: Approximately 6,354 sq. km.
  • Major districts covered: Mayurbhanj and Balasore.
  • Combined length of the Budhabalanga and Jambhira rivers: Approximately 289 km.

The Budhabalanga catchment is characterised by the forested Similipal uplands, the agricultural plains around Baripada and the low-lying coastal plains of Balasore.

Barehipani Falls and Similipal

The Budhabalanga River is associated with Similipal, an important forested region in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha. Barehipani Falls, a spectacular two-tiered waterfall approximately 399 metres high, is located within the Similipal landscape. The region includes the Similipal Tiger Reserve and Similipal Biosphere Reserve. Its forested hills form an important catchment area, supplying streams that contribute to the river system.

Irrigation Projects

The Budhabalanga basin supports agriculture through irrigation infrastructure and water-management projects.

  • Sunei Irrigation Project: Associated with the Sunei River.
  • Kalo Irrigation Project: Associated with the Kalo River.
  • Baladiha Irrigation Project: A medium irrigation project in the region.
  • Budhabalanga and Sono projects: Included in basin-level irrigation planning.

Project completion and operational status should be verified against the latest Odisha government records before publication.

Economic Importance

The Budhabalanga River supports the economy of northern Odisha in several ways.

  • Agriculture: River water and irrigation infrastructure support paddy cultivation and other crops.
  • Fisheries: The river supports local fishing activities.
  • Water supply: Surface water and groundwater contribute to domestic and agricultural needs.
  • Local livelihoods: Agriculture and other water-dependent activities support communities in Mayurbhanj and Balasore.

Floods and Environmental Concerns

The Budhabalanga can experience flooding during periods of intense monsoon rainfall.

  • Heavy rainfall: Runoff from the Similipal hills can increase river discharge rapidly.
  • Coastal flooding: The flat lower course can slow the drainage of floodwater.
  • Soil erosion: Catchment degradation can increase erosion and sediment movement.
  • Water pollution: Urban wastewater and agricultural runoff can affect river water quality.
  • Seasonal water stress: Reduced flow during the dry season can affect irrigation and other water uses.

Catchment conservation, flood forecasting, embankment maintenance and improved wastewater treatment are important for sustainable river management.
