When Is World Cities Day 2026?
World Cities Day 2026 will be observed on 31 October 2026. The global observance will take place in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China, with the wider programme scheduled from 31 October to 2 November 2026. The related SDG Cities Global Conference will be held in Shanghai on 2-3 November 2026.
About World Cities Day
World Cities Day is a United Nations observance that highlights the importance of making cities safe, inclusive and sustainable.
- The United Nations General Assembly established World Cities Day through Resolution 68/239 in 2013.
- It was first celebrated on 31 October 2014 and is observed every year on the same date.
- It aims to raise awareness about urban problems and encourage countries to improve living conditions in cities.
- The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) leads the observance and promotes sustainable urban development.
- World Cities Day marks the end of Urban October, a month-long campaign that focuses on urban issues and sustainable cities.
World Cities Day 2026 Theme
The theme of World Cities Day 2026 is “Regenerating the City: Adequate Housing for All.”
The theme highlights the importance of urban regeneration in improving housing conditions, upgrading existing neighbourhoods and creating inclusive, climate-resilient communities.
Urban regeneration involves improving existing urban areas through housing redevelopment, infrastructure upgrades, better public spaces and improved access to essential services. It can help cities address deteriorating neighbourhoods and underused urban land while improving residents’ quality of life.
The major priorities of the 2026 theme include:
- Adequate housing: Improve access to safe, affordable and secure homes.
- Urban renewal: Upgrade existing neighbourhoods and improve infrastructure and public services.
- Inclusive development: Involve residents in redevelopment decisions and protect them from displacement.
- Climate resilience: Integrate green spaces, flood management and climate-resilient infrastructure into urban planning.
The theme is especially relevant to the global housing crisis. According to UN-Habitat’s World Cities Report 2026, up to 3.4 billion people lack access to adequate housing, secure tenure, basic services or affordable living conditions.

World Cities Day 2026: India’s Participation
The 2nd World Cities Day Connect 2026, scheduled to take place in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on 31 October 2026, connects India’s urban development priorities with the global observance of World Cities Day.
- The Chennai event adopts the global theme, “Regenerating the City: Adequate Housing for All,” which focuses on improving existing urban areas and expanding access to adequate housing.
- Organised by the Sustainable Development Council with support from UN-Habitat, the event aims to translate global urban development priorities into local discussions and partnerships.
- Its focus on affordable housing, sustainable infrastructure, climate resilience and participatory governance reflects the objectives of Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
- For India, the event is relevant to addressing urban challenges such as informal settlements, housing affordability, inadequate basic services and climate-related risks.
Significance of World Cities Day 2026
World Cities Day highlights the need to make cities more inclusive, resilient and sustainable by addressing housing shortages, urban inequality and environmental challenges.
- Addresses the housing crisis: It draws attention to the need for safe, adequate and affordable housing, along with access to basic services.
- Promotes sustainable urbanisation: It encourages planned urban growth, efficient land use and better infrastructure to improve the quality of urban life.
- Supports climate resilience: It highlights the importance of climate-resilient buildings, green spaces and infrastructure that can withstand floods, heatwaves and other climate-related risks.
- Reduces urban inequality: It promotes inclusive neighbourhoods and better access to housing, transport and public services for vulnerable communities.
- Strengthens urban governance: It encourages cooperation among governments, local authorities, communities and other stakeholders in urban planning and development.
- Advances the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): It supports SDG 11, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
World Cities Day and Sustainable Development Goal 11
World Cities Day supports Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11), which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable by 2030.
Key targets of SDG 11 include:
- Target 11.1: Ensure access to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services, and upgrade slums.
- Target 11.2: Provide safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all.
- Target 11.3: Promote inclusive and sustainable urbanisation and improve participatory urban planning and management.
- Target 11.5: Reduce deaths, the number of people affected and economic losses caused by disasters.
- Target 11.6: Reduce the adverse environmental impact of cities, particularly air pollution and municipal waste.
- Target 11.7: Provide universal access to safe, inclusive and accessible green and public spaces.
The 2026 theme, “Regenerating the City: Adequate Housing for All,” is particularly relevant to Target 11.1 because it highlights the need to improve housing conditions and ensure access to essential urban services.
Government Initiatives for Sustainable Urban Development in India
The Government of India has introduced several schemes to improve urban housing, basic services, sanitation and infrastructure. These initiatives support the broader objectives of World Cities Day 2026.
- Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0): Launched in 2024, the scheme aims to support one crore eligible urban poor and middle-class families in constructing, purchasing or renting affordable houses over five years. Its four components include beneficiary-led construction, affordable housing in partnership, affordable rental housing and interest subsidies.
- Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT 2.0): Focuses on improving urban water supply, sewerage and septage management, water-body rejuvenation and water security.
- Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0: Promotes garbage-free cities through scientific waste management, source segregation, sanitation and the remediation of legacy dumpsites.
- Smart Cities Mission: Promoted technology-enabled urban services, improved infrastructure and better urban management in selected cities.
- National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM): Supports urban poor households through livelihood opportunities, skill development and self-employment, linking inclusive urban development with economic security.
These initiatives address key challenges associated with sustainable urbanisation, including inadequate housing, gaps in basic services, environmental degradation and urban poverty.
