Operation Trident is a major crackdown launched by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on 23 October 2026 to break a cross-border drug trafficking network in North East India. Carried out with the Mizoram Police and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), it targeted both the drug routes and the money trail behind them. The operation is part of the government’s push to wipe out drug networks by 2029.

Operation Trident 2026 Objectives

Operation Trident 2026 aims to combat drug trafficking, disrupt illegal drug networks, and strengthen security in Northeast India. The key objectives of the operation are discussed below.

  • Dismantle a transnational cartel: The main goal was to break both the operational and financial backbone of a major drug trafficking syndicate working across India, Myanmar and Bangladesh.
  • Stop the flow of methamphetamine and heroin: The cartel moved these drugs through the Myanmar–Mizoram–Manipur–Assam–Tripura corridor into mainland India and Bangladesh.
  • Shift from seizures to networks: In line with the Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026–2029), the focus is now on a network-centric and financial disruption approach, not just catching drugs or carriers.
  • Follow the money trail: The operation aimed to strike both the logistics nodes and the illicit financial channels of the syndicate at the same time.
  • Zero tolerance against drugs: The action reflects the government’s stated policy of zero tolerance towards drug trafficking.
  • Long-term mission: The government has set a target to eradicate every drug network by 31 December 2029.

Operation Trident 2026 Key Features

Operation Trident 2026 focuses on coordinated anti-drug operations, intelligence sharing, and action against illegal drug trafficking networks. The key features of the operation are discussed below.

  • 38 teams, 38 locations: 38 multi-agency composite teams moved at the same time across Assam, Mizoram and Manipur, working under a unified command structure.
  • Early-hours strike: The operation began in the early hours of 23 October 2026, so suspects had little chance to flee or hide illegal assets.
  • Covering key hubs and border areas: Locations included Aizawl, Champhai and the Indo-Myanmar border trading town of Zokhawthar in Mizoram, along with Churachandpur in Manipur and the Cachar transit corridor in Assam.
  • Careful advance planning: Days of covert intelligence fusion, joint target-mapping and high-level tactical briefings came before the raids.
  • Searches and financial audits together: Physical searches, enquiries and financial audits were carried out at the same time across a wide area with difficult terrain.
  • Built on earlier investigations: The operation grew out of long-running, intelligence-led backward and forward linkage probes by the NCB, Mizoram Police and ED.
  • Use of financial profiling and digital forensics: Earlier arrests led to detailed money-trail analysis, which exposed a wider web of facilitators, shell entities and money mules.
  • Targeting both ends of the network: The plan was to hit the people moving drugs and the people handling the money.

Operation Trident 2026 Implementation and Agencies Involved

Operation Trident 2026 was implemented through coordinated efforts by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and other law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking in Northeast India. The key implementation measures and agencies involved are discussed below.

  • Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB): The NCB led the operation and had been investigating the network through earlier NDPS cases.
  • Mizoram Police: The police worked closely with the NCB on intelligence sharing and field action. Police forces of all three states also took part.
  • Enforcement Directorate (ED): The ED handled the money laundering and hawala side, including freezing and attaching illegally acquired assets.
  • The alleged kingpin: The network was led by Myanmar-based Thangcintuang alias Chintuang alias Tluanga, wanted in over 10 NDPS Act cases. He was arrested in Delhi earlier this year, in May.
  • Key facilitator: Vungkhanthawna coordinated the movement and delivery of Myanmar-origin consignments. He was arrested and later detained under the PITNDPS Act.
  • Primary hawala operator: Lalrampari was arrested by the NCB on 8 August 2024. Her case exposed nearly ₹100 crore in illegal hawala transactions.
  • Assam corridor logistics head: Abu Saleh alias Saifuddin was arrested from Cachar on 20 November 2025 and is linked to several NDPS cases.
  • Wider government strategy: The Vision Document on Drug Control (2026–2029) was launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 26 June 2026. It involves States and Union Territories, over 40 Ministries, central agencies and the pharmaceutical sector, and aims to dismantle 100 major cartels.

Operation Trident 2026 Outcomes and Significance

Operation Trident 2026 has contributed to combating drug trafficking, disrupting illegal drug networks, and strengthening law enforcement efforts in Northeast India. The key outcomes and significance of the operation are discussed below

  • 18 people were arrested during the coordinated strikes carried out across Assam, Mizoram and Manipur, as teams moved on all locations at the same time so that suspects had little chance to escape.
  • Nearly ₹100 crore in hawala transactions was uncovered, giving investigators a clear picture of how the cartel moved its illegal money through informal channels and kept its drug business running.
  • 1,424 bank accounts were frozen, which cuts off a large part of the network’s access to funds and makes it much harder for the syndicate to pay its carriers, facilitators and associates.
  • Properties worth ₹17.82 crore were attached, meaning assets bought with illicit money were taken under legal control so that the cartel cannot use or sell them.
  • 500 detonators and ₹12 lakh in cash were also seized during the searches, adding to the recoveries made on the day of the operation.
  • The operation is seen as a benchmark in cooperation, since the NCB, Mizoram Police and Enforcement Directorate worked under a unified command and shared intelligence and planning to hit both the drug routes and the financial network together.
  • Enforcement numbers are rising across the country, with data for 2025 showing an increase of over 50% in arrests and a nearly 53% rise in cases registered under the NDPS Act compared with 2024.
  • Big challenges still remain, because fully dismantling the network requires identifying and prosecuting all the suppliers based in Myanmar. Foreign-based operatives often stay out of reach, as seen in the 2021 Mundra port case, where about 3,000 kg of heroin was seized but the main Afghanistan-based suppliers are yet to be brought to justice.
  • Seizures alone are not enough to measure success, because the quantity of drugs seized does not show whether availability or use has actually gone down. Punjab, for example, still faces serious public health challenges from drug abuse.
  • The safety of people who speak up is a concern, as reported incidents involving anti-drug activists and worried families raise questions about how well those who raise their voice against drug networks are protected.
  • The real test lies in follow-through, as success will depend on consistent implementation, strong coordination among agencies and catching the “big sharks” by following the money trail all the way to convictions.
