Madhukranti Portal, Features, Significance, National Beekeeping

Madhukranti Portal, launched by the National Bee Board under the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission, ensures honey traceability, quality control, export growth and higher farmer income.

Madhukranti Portal

Madhukranti Portal is a digital initiative launched by the National Bee Board under the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission to ensure online registration and end to end traceability of honey and other beehive products in India. It supports the broader goal of the Sweet Revolution, which aims to modernize apiculture and raise farmers’ income. India produced about 1.4 lakh metric tonnes of natural honey in 2024 and exported nearly 1.07 lakh metric tonnes worth USD 177.55 million in FY 2023-24, emerging as the world’s second largest honey exporter, rising sharply from ninth position in 2020.

Madhukranti Portal Features

The Madhukranti Portal creates a digital ecosystem for transparent honey production and marketing in India. The key highlighting features of the portal are:

  • Online Registration System: The portal enables beekeepers, societies, firms and companies to register digitally with the National Bee Board, building an authenticated national database of stakeholders across the honey value chain.
  • Traceability Mechanism: It provides source tracking of honey and bee products, ensuring that the origin of each batch can be digitally verified to prevent adulteration and improve consumer confidence in domestic and export markets.
  • Integrated Stakeholder Database: The system maintains records of producers, processors, marketers and hive manufacturers, strengthening coordination across production, processing and supply chains through centralized digital documentation.
  • Quality Monitoring Support: By linking traceability with testing infrastructure created under the mission, the portal supports verification of honey standards and promotes compliance with export norms and quality benchmarks.

Madhukranti Portal Significance

The Madhukranti Portal strengthens transparency, farmer income and export competitiveness through digital governance in apiculture. The importance of this portal can be seen below:

  • Boost to Farmers’ Income: By ensuring traceable and quality certified honey, producers gain better market prices, improved buyer trust and expanded access to premium domestic and international markets.
  • Export Promotion: India’s honey exports reached USD 177.55 million in FY 2023-24 and digital traceability enhances credibility in key destinations such as the USA, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Libya.
  • Employment Generation: Organized registration and market linkage encourage entrepreneurship in honey processing, packaging and branding, expanding rural livelihood opportunities in allied sectors.
  • Strengthened Governance: Digital data enables better monitoring of production trends, supply chains and policy implementation under the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission.

National Beekeeping and Honey Mission

National Beekeeping and Honey Mission is a Central Sector Scheme promoting scientific beekeeping for holistic sectoral growth. The key features of this mission are:

  • Budget: The mission has a total outlay of ₹500 crore and is implemented from FY 2020-21 to FY 2025-26 to accelerate structured development of apiculture.
  • Implementing Agency: The National Bee Board serves as the nodal body responsible for coordination, approval and monitoring of projects nationwide.
  • Three Mini Missions: The scheme operates through Mini Mission I for productivity improvement, Mini Mission II for post harvest management and Mini Mission III for research and technology generation.
  • Organization: Under the mission, honey testing labs, processing units, cold storage, women empowerment activities and formation of beekeepers’ producer organizations have been promoted to achieve the Sweet Revolution objective.
