The Banas River is an important river of northwestern India flowing entirely within the state of Rajasthan. It is the largest tributary of the Chambal River and plays a significant role in the drainage system of eastern Rajasthan.

Banas River Location and Origin

  • Banas River Basin is located in the eastern part of Rajasthan and occupies a significant area in the east of the Aravali mountain range.
  • The river originates from the Khamnor Hills, near Kumbhalgarh in the Aravalli Range.
  • Its source lies in the Rajsamand district at an elevation of around 500 meters above sea level.
  • It is bounded in the east by Chambal river basin, in the north by Gambhir and Banganga river basins, in the west by Shekhawati and Luni river basins and in the south by Sabarmati and Mahi river basins.

Banas River Course

  • The Banas River flows in a northeast direction across Rajasthan. It passes through the districts of Rajsamand, Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Bhilwara, Tonk, Sawai Madhopur.
  • The river ultimately drains into the Chambal River at Rameshwar near Sawai Madhopur. 
  • The river is seasonal in nature and depends heavily on monsoon rainfall.

Banas River Tributaries

  • Major right bank tributaries include Berach and Menali
  • Major left bank tributaries are Kothari, Khari, Dai, Dheel, Sohadra, Morel and Kalisel.

Major Dams on Banas River

  • Several dams have been constructed for irrigation and drinking water supply such as Bisalpur Dam and Mordhan Dam.
