Bindusara was the second ruler of the Mauryan Empire and the son of Chandragupta Maurya, the founder of the empire. He succeeded his father around 297 BCE and played an important role in consolidating and expanding the Mauryan Empire.
Bindusara is particularly associated with the expansion of Mauryan control towards the Deccan. Greek sources refer to him as Amitrochates, which is generally linked to the Sanskrit term Amitraghata, meaning “destroyer of foes.”
Bindusara’s Accession to the Throne
Bindusara succeeded Chandragupta Maurya around 297 BCE. By this time, Chandragupta had already established a powerful empire covering large parts of northern India.
Bindusara inherited a well-organised imperial system and worked to strengthen Mauryan authority over the territories inherited from his father. His reign served as an important link between the foundation of the Mauryan Empire under Chandragupta and its further expansion under Ashoka.
Bindusara and the Expansion into the Deccan
One of the most important aspects of Bindusara’s reign was the expansion of the Mauryan Empire towards the Deccan.
According to the traditional historical interpretation, Bindusara’s military campaigns extended Mauryan influence into large parts of the Deccan region. His expansion is believed to have reached areas close to present-day Karnataka.
However, the Mauryan advance did not extend to the extreme southern parts of the Indian peninsula. The territories associated with the Cholas, Pandyas and Cheras remained outside direct Mauryan control.
Why Did Mauryan Expansion Stop in Southern India?
The southern kingdoms appear to have maintained friendly relations with the Mauryas, which may have reduced the need for direct military conquest.
The Cholas, Pandyas and Cheras were important political powers of southern India. Their territories were therefore not incorporated into the Mauryan Empire in the same manner as the regions conquered farther north and in the Deccan.
