Table of Contents

Boko Haram is an extremist Islamist militant organization that emerged in northeastern Nigeria. The group seeks to establish an Islamic state governed strictly by Sharia law and rejects Western-style education, democracy, and secular governance.

The name “Boko Haram” is often translated as “Western education is forbidden”. Although this is not the group’s official name, it reflects its opposition to Western cultural and educational influences.

Founded in 2002 by Mohammed Yusuf, Boko Haram initially operated as a religious movement but gradually transformed into a violent insurgent group after clashes with Nigerian security forces.
