About Cape Verde

• Cape Verde, also known as Cabo Verde, is an island country located in the central Atlantic Ocean, off the northwest coast of Africa.
• It comprises a group of ten volcanic islands, which are divided into the Barlavento (windward) and Sotavento (leeward) groups.
• The country has a total area of approximately 4,033 sq.km., making it one of the smaller nations in Africa. 
• It is located near Senegal and is the nearest point on the continent. 
• Climate: Generally moderate, the climate is characterized by stable temperatures with extreme aridity. 
• Terrain: The terrain of the Cabo Verde islands varies from the geologically older, flatter islands in the east and the newer, more mountainous islands in the west. 
• The lack of significant rivers is due to the islands’ volcanic nature and the arid climate, which limits the development of long or permanent river systems.  
• History:
  • Cabo Verde was uninhabited until it was colonized by Portugal in the mid-15th century. 
  • After centuries under Portuguese rule, Cabo Verde won its independence in 1975. 
• Capital: Praia
• Political System: It is a multiparty republic. 
• Population: The overwhelming majority of the population of Cabo Verde is of mixed European and African descent and is often referred to as mestiço or Crioulo.
• Languages spoken: Although Portuguese is the official language and is used in formal situations, Crioulo, one of the oldest of the Portuguese creole languages, is by far the most widely spoken.
