About Gekko Mizoramensis:

  • It is a subgenus called Ptychozoon of the Gekko genus.
  • There are 13 species of them throughout the world and they are found in Southeast Asia.
  • Before founding this species, only one species- Ptychozoon lionotum or smooth-backed gliding gecko-was found in Mizoram.
  • Its habitat spread into the parts of Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia along with Mizoram.
  • It is arboreal, nocturnal and glides from one tree to another.
  • The new species is most similar to its sister species Gekko popaensis, from which it differs in having an uncorrected pairwise sequence divergence of 7–14% and by discrete differences in morphology and colour pattern. 
  • Flying geckos have webbed limbs and flat tails to help them glide (they do not fly).
  • The species is paraphyletic and comprises multiple cryptic species.

Its evergreen hills and dense bamboo jungles, Mizoram lies in the southern most tip of north east India. Called the Land of Blue Mountains, the hills are crisscrossed by gushing rivers and high sparkling waterfalls.
