India-Vietnam Defence Cooperation is gaining greater strategic importance as both countries deepen defence and security ties, with co-production of Indian defence items emerging as a significant area of cooperation in 2026.

India-Vietnam Defence Cooperation 2026: Why in News?

India and Vietnam have agreed to deepen their defence and security cooperation, including co-production of Indian defence items, during the 19th India-Vietnam Joint Commission Meeting held in New Delhi.

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung co-chaired the 19th India-Vietnam Joint Commission Meeting on trade, economic, scientific and technological cooperation.
  • The two sides identified co-production of Indian defence items as a way forward for strengthening their ongoing defence and security cooperation.
  • Defence and security cooperation is one of the central pillars of the Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Vietnam.
  • India regards Vietnam as a key partner in its Act East Policy, Vision MAHASAGAR and Indo-Pacific approach.
  • The two sides also discussed trade, investments, supply chains, connectivity, space, nuclear energy, capacity building and people-to-people ties.

India-Vietnam defence ties have gradually expanded from equipment support and capacity building towards broader strategic and defence-industrial cooperation.

  • June 2022: India handed over 12 high-speed guard boats to Vietnam, built by Larsen & Toubro under a US$100 million Line of Credit.
  • July 2023: India gifted the indigenously built missile corvette INS Kirpan to Vietnam, strengthening bilateral maritime and defence cooperation.
  • July 2024: Two additional Lines of Credit worth US$120 million and US$180 million were signed between the Exim Bank of India and the Finance Ministry of Vietnam.
  • May 2026: During Vietnamese General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President To Lam’s State Visit to India, the two countries elevated their relationship to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, providing renewed impetus to bilateral ties.
  • September 2026: India and Vietnam identified co-production of Indian defence items as a way forward for deepening defence and security cooperation.
