International Day of Democracy is observed every year on 15 September to promote democratic principles, public participation, human rights and accountable governance. The United Nations General Assembly established the day in 2007 through a consensus resolution. The first observance took place in 2008. International Day of Democracy 2026 provides an opportunity to review democratic institutions, citizen participation, freedom of expression and the role of parliaments in peaceful and inclusive governance.

A UN Headquarters event will examine citizens’ assemblies, participation, dialogue and deliberative democracy.

International Day of Democracy 2026 History

The International Day of Democracy 2026 developed from international efforts to strengthen democracy, parliamentary institutions and citizen participation across countries.

• 1997 IPU Declaration: The Inter Parliamentary Union adopted the Universal Declaration on Democracy in September 1997, affirming democratic principles, government and international cooperation.
• ICNRD Process: International conferences on new and restored democracies began in 1988 following the initiative of Philippine President Corazon C. Aquino after the People Power Revolution.
• Doha Conference: The sixth ICNRD conference was held in Doha, Qatar, in 2006. Its declaration and Plan of Action reaffirmed fundamental democratic principles and values.
• UN Resolution: Qatar led consultations and drafting efforts for a UN resolution. The General Assembly adopted it by consensus on 8 November 2007.
• First Observance: The first International Day of Democracy was observed in 2008. Since then, parliamentary events have been organised across countries every year.

International Day of Democracy 2026 will include discussions and activities focused on participation, dialogue, inclusion and responsive governance.

• UN Headquarters Event: The United Nations Democracy Fund and United Nations Office for Partnerships will host an event on 15 September 2026 at UN Headquarters.
• Citizens’ Assemblies: The event will examine experiences of citizens’ assemblies and how deliberative democracy can increase public ownership of decision making.
• Parliamentary Activities: Member parliaments mark the day through workshops, debates, photo competitions, radio programmes, civil society meetings and other public activities.
• Global Participation: Since 2008, hundreds of parliamentary events have been organised worldwide to increase awareness about democracy and citizen participation.
