Koyapalli Kelappan Nair was born on 24 August 1889 at Muchukunnu in Koyilandy, Kozhikode, Kerala. He died on 7 October 1971. K. Kelappan’s life combined political activism, education, journalism and social reform. His career reflected the wider regional spread of Gandhian nationalism in Kerala.
- Early Life: Koyapalli Kelappan Nair was born on 24 August 1889 at Muchukunnu, Koyilandy, Kozhikode. His parents were Thenpoyil Kanaran Nair and Koyapalli Kunjamma.
- Education and Teaching: He studied in Kozhikode and Madras and graduated from the University of Madras. He later worked as a teacher at St. Berchmans High School, Changanassery.
- Nair Service Society: Kelappan was the founding President and first president of the Nair Service Society. He later became the principal of a school run by the organisation.
- Journalism: He helped establish Mathrubhumi and served as its editor for several years. Journalism became an important part of his public engagement and nationalist activities.
- Political Career: After independence, Kelappan left the Congress Party and joined the Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party. He was elected to Parliament from the Ponnani Lok Sabha seat in 1952.

K. Kelappan’s contributions extended from anti colonial resistance to social reform. His major movements connected political freedom with equality and removal of caste based discrimination.
- Vaikom Satyagraha: Kelappan played a prominent role in the Vaikom Satyagraha of 1924-25. The movement challenged restrictions on lower castes using roads surrounding the Vaikom temple.
- Payyannur Salt Satyagraha: Kelappan led the Payyannur Salt Satyagraha during the Civil Disobedience Movement. Salt laws were violated on 21 April 1930 by preparing salt.
- Guruvayur Satyagraha: Kelappan led the Guruvayur Satyagraha in 1931-32 for temple entry and against untouchability. He undertook a twelve day fast in September 1932.
- Social Equality: He consistently opposed untouchability and caste discrimination. His reform activities sought equality among different sections of society and connected social emancipation with national freedom.
- Kerala’s National Movement: The Payyannur Conference of 1928 supported Poorna Swaraj, tenancy related demands and a united Malayalam speaking region, linking political, agrarian and regional concerns.
- Post Independence Work: Kelappan became a Sarvodaya worker and participated in the Bhoodan Movement in Kerala. He also worked for Kerala’s linguistic unification and led several Gandhian organisations.

K. Kelappan’s public legacy continued through commemorations and his association with major Gandhian organisations. His recognition also reflects his lasting place in Kerala’s modern history.

- Gandhian Organisations: He served as president of Kerala Sarvodaya Sangh, Kerala Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, Kerala Sarvodaya Mandal and Gandhi Peace Foundation, Calicut.
- Commemorative Stamp: India Post issued a commemorative stamp in his honour in 1990. This recognised his contribution to India’s freedom struggle and public life.
