The Lesser Himalayas, popularly known as Himachal, Middle Himalayas, or Lower Himalayas, form the middle section of the Himalayan mountain system. They are situated between the Greater Himalayas (Himadri) in the north and the Shiwalik Range in the south. Stretching for nearly 2,500 km across the northern part of the Indian subcontinent, these mountains are known for their breathtaking valleys, famous hill stations, dense forests, and snow-clad peaks.
Lesser Himalayas Location and Extent
The Lesser Himalayas form the middle Himalayan belt and run almost parallel to both the Greater Himalayas and the Shiwalik Range.

The range passes through several regions, including Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, and Arunachal Pradesh.
Physical Features of the Lesser Himalayas
The Lesser Himalayas (Himachal) are characterised by rugged mountain ranges, deep valleys, steep slopes, and dense forests, making them one of the most diverse and geologically active regions of the Himalayan mountain system.
- Rock Composition: Mainly composed of metamorphic, sedimentary, and crystalline rocks such as schists, quartzites, slates, limestones, and gneisses.
- Mountain Relief: Features rugged ridges, sharp peaks, deep gorges, and narrow river valleys formed by tectonic activity and erosion.
- Slopes: The southern slopes are generally steep and rocky, while the northern slopes are comparatively gentle and densely forested.
- Snow Cover: Many high-altitude peaks remain snow-covered during winter, with a few areas supporting small glaciers.
- River Valleys: Home to fertile valleys such as the Kashmir Valley, Kangra Valley, and Kullu Valley, carved by major Himalayan rivers.
- Forest Cover: Rich in oak, pine, deodar, fir, spruce, and rhododendron forests, supporting high biodiversity.
- Seismic Activity: Being part of the young fold mountains, the region is geologically active and prone to earthquakes, landslides, and soil erosion.
Important Ranges of the Lesser Himalayas
The Lesser Himalayas consist of several prominent mountain ranges that extend across India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Pakistan. These ranges are known for their high peaks, scenic valleys, important river systems, hill stations, and strategic mountain passes, making them significant from geographical, ecological, and economic perspectives.
1. Pir Panjal Range
- Longest and largest range of the Lesser Himalayas.
- Extends for about 300 km from the Jhelum River to the Upper Beas River.
- Average elevation is around 5,000 metres.
- Composed mainly of volcanic and metamorphic rocks.
- Separates the Kashmir Valley from the Himachal and Punjab regions.
- Important passes include Pir Panjal Pass and Banihal Pass.
- Rich in coniferous forests, alpine meadows, and tourist destinations.
2. Zanskar (Zaskar) Range
- Located mainly in Ladakh and parts of Himachal Pradesh.
- Forms a natural boundary between Ladakh and the Kashmir Valley.
- Source region of rivers such as the Zanskar, Suru, and Shingo.
- Contains several snow-covered peaks, glaciers, and high-altitude passes.

3. Dhauladhar Range

4. Mussoorie Range

- Lal Tibba (2,275 metres) is the highest point in the range.

5. Mahabharat Lekh (Mahabharat Range)
- Extends across Nepal and continues into Sikkim and Bhutan.

7. Miri, Abor, and Mishmi Hills

The Lesser Himalayas experience a moderate mountain climate with variations in temperature and rainfall based on altitude, supporting diverse forest ecosystems, rich biodiversity, and a wide range of natural vegetation.
- Climate: Characterised by cool summers, cold winters, and heavy snowfall at higher elevations.
- Rainfall: Receives significant rainfall from the Southwest Monsoon, especially on the southern slopes, while the northern slopes receive comparatively less rainfall.
- Temperature Variation: Temperatures decrease with increasing altitude, resulting in different climatic zones within the region.
- Snowfall: Higher mountain areas remain snow-covered during winter, and some peaks retain snow throughout the year.
- Tropical Forests: Lower elevations are covered with subtropical broadleaf and mixed deciduous forests.
