A recent comment by the Tamil Nadu Minister for Environment and Climate Change, that soap and shampoo used by the public can also cause excessive foaming in the Noyyal River, which flows through Tiruppur district, has sparked criticism.

About Noyyal River

• It is an important tributary of the Cauvery River, flowing through Western Tamil Nadu. 
• The “Noyyal” is a sacred river in Tamil history, and its original name was “Kanchi Nadi”; however, it was later changed to the name of the place where it drains into the Kaveri River in 1750 A.D. 
• Course: 
  • It begins from numerous small streams in the Vellingiri Hills, which are part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats.
  • It flows through the districts of Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Erode and meets the Cauvery River at the Noyyal village in Karur District.  
• Total Length: 158 km
• It is a seasonal river with rapid flows during the monsoon periods. 
• The Noyyal watershed is connected with a series of 32 tanks, 14 major canals, 23 anicuts, and 55 check dams. 
• Most of these check dams and anicuts were constructed by the Chola Kings, who ruled the region in the 9th to 12th centuries to augment irrigation and control floods downstream. 
• The Noyyal River has two main tributaries: Cheyyar River (Chadiaar River) and Kanchimanadhi River.
• It is also home to major dams like Aathupalayam Dam and Orathuppalayam Dam. 
• Until the early 20th century, the Noyyal was the main drinking water source for the region.  
• Today the Noyyal is one of the most polluted rivers in India.
