Why is 25 September Observed as Antyodaya Diwas?

25 September is observed as Antyodaya Diwas because the idea of Antyodaya was closely associated with Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya’s vision of development and social welfare.

He emphasised that the benefits of development should reach the last person in society, particularly those who are poor and disadvantaged.

To commemorate his contribution and highlight this principle, the Government of India declared 25 September as Antyodaya Diwas in 2014.

What is Antyodaya?

Antyodaya in Contemporary Governance

• Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana (DAY) focuses on improving livelihood opportunities for the rural and urban poor through initiatives related to self-employment, skill development and access to livelihoods.

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya and Integral Humanism?

Integral Humanism was the political and philosophical framework associated with Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya presented the idea of Integral Humanism through a series of four lectures delivered in Bombay in April 1965.

Integral Humanism views human beings as an integrated whole comprising the body, mind, intellect and soul. It argues that development should not be understood only in terms of material or economic progress. The approach emphasises a balance between:

• Individual and society
• Material and spiritual needs
• Economic development and social welfare
• Individual freedom and social responsibility

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya and Bharatiya Jana Sangh

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya played an important organisational and ideological role in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS), which was established in 1951.

He served as the party’s General Secretary for several years and later became its President in 1967.

His political thought emphasised nationalism, social organisation and an approach to development rooted in Indian conditions.

The Bharatiya Jana Sangh later became an important predecessor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Death

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya died on 11 February 1968. His body was found near Mughal Sarai railway station in present-day Uttar Pradesh, after he was travelling by train. The circumstances surrounding his death led to an official inquiry and became a subject of public discussion. The railway station was later renamed Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction in 2018.
