The Pranahita River is the largest tributary of the Godavari River and an important river of the Deccan Plateau. It is formed by the confluence of the Wardha and Wainganga rivers near the Maharashtra-Telangana border. The river flows southward for about 113 km before joining the Godavari at Kaleshwaram. It also supports forests, wildlife and water based livelihoods.

Pranahita River

The Pranahita River forms a major drainage network within the Godavari basin and carries the combined waters of several important peninsular rivers.

• Origin: The Pranahita River originates at the confluence of the Wardha and Wainganga rivers near Tumdi Hettty, Kouthala Mandal, close to Sirpur (T), along the Maharashtra-Telangana border.
• River Course: The river has a relatively short course of about 113 km and flows mainly southward, which differs from the general drainage direction of many rivers across the Deccan Plateau.
• States and Districts: The Pranahita River flows along the boundary of Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra and Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial and Jayashankar Bhupalapally districts in Telangana.
• Tributary of Godavari: After its southward journey, the Pranahita River joins the Godavari River at Kaleshwaram in Telangana, forming an important part of the Godavari drainage system.
• Drainage Basin: The Pranahita River carries the combined waters of the Penganga, Wardha and Wainganga rivers and drains a large part of Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region and adjoining areas.
• Basin Size: The Pranahita sub basin covers about 109,078 km². It accounts for nearly 34% of the drainage basin of the Godavari River.
• Tributaries: Important tributaries and associated streams include Mamda, Nagul vagu, Wil Vagu, Pedda Vagu, Madharam, Bamar, Dongri and Patra.
• Dams and Project: The Pranahita River currently has no dams built directly on it. The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project includes a barrage project associated with the river system.
• Water Transport: The river supports water transport between Sironcha and Kaleshwaram. 
• River Festival: It is also associated with the Pranahita Pushkaram, a traditional river festival observed in the Hindu tradition. The 12 day Pranahita river festival is dedicated to worshipping the river. Maha Harathi and other special rituals mark its grand finale.

Pranahita River Biodiversity

The Pranahita River passes through forested landscapes and wildlife habitats that provide water and food resources for diverse species.

• Wildlife Sanctuaries: Two wildlife sanctuaries are associated with the river, namely Pranahita Wildlife Sanctuary in Telangana and Pranhita Wildlife Sanctuary in Maharashtra.
• Flora: Major vegetation includes Dalbergia sissoo, Ficus spp., Dalbergia latifolia, Dalbergia paniculata and Pterocarpus marsupium, along with other deciduous forest species.
• Fauna: The sanctuary is known for Blackbuck and supports more than 40 mammal species, 50 bird species and over 20 reptile species.
• Major Animals: Wildlife includes tigers, leopards, rhesus, langurs, hyenas, wild dogs, sloth bears and forest cats, highlighting the ecological importance of the Pranahita River landscape.
