Experts say that Salmonella infection can range from mild gastroenteritis that gets better on its own to a serious bloodstream infection and deserves more attention than it is currently being given in India.

About Salmonella

  • Salmonella is a group of bacteria that can cause different infections.
  • Typhoid and paratyphoid or enteric fever, are caused by Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi.

Sources and Transmission of Salmonella

  • Salmonella bacteria are widely distributed in domestic and wild animals.
  • They are prevalent in food animals such as poultry, pigs, and cattle; and in pets.
  • Salmonellosis in humans is generally contracted primarily through the consumption of contaminated food of animal origin, although other foods, including green vegetables contaminated by manure, have been implicated in its transmission.
  • Person-to-person transmission can also occur through the faecal-oral route.
  • Human cases also occur where individuals have contact with infected animals.

Symptoms of Salmonella

  • Most people infected with Salmonella will begin to develop symptoms 12 to 72 hours after infection.
  • Most people with salmonellosis develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
  • More severe cases of salmonellosis may include a high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, a rash, blood in the urine or stool.

Treatment for Salmonella

  • The illness usually lasts four to seven days, and most people recover without treatment.
