World Biofuel Day is observed every year on 10 August to spread awareness about biofuels as clean and renewable alternatives to fossil fuels. The day also highlights government efforts to promote sustainable energy, reduce dependence on crude oil imports and encourage cleaner transport fuels. It was first observed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in August 2015 and commemorates the successful operation of an engine using peanut oil by Sir Rudolf Diesel on 9 August 1893.

World Biofuel Day 2026 will be observed on 10 August 2026 across India and several other countries. The day promotes the use of biofuels produced from renewable biomass instead of fossil fuels. It also creates awareness about ethanol, biodiesel, bio CNG, second generation biofuels and government programmes supporting cleaner energy, rural development and sustainable economic growth through renewable fuel production.
World Biofuel Day Theme
The official theme for World Biofuel Day 2026 has not been announced yet. Every year, the observance focuses on increasing awareness about renewable fuels, promoting innovation in biofuel technologies, encouraging sustainable energy use and strengthening cooperation among governments, industries, researchers, farmers and consumers for cleaner fuel adoption.

World Biofuel Day promotes renewable fuels for cleaner energy, stronger energy security, sustainable agriculture and reduced dependence on conventional fossil fuels.
- Promote renewable fuels: Increase public awareness about biofuels as environmentally friendly alternatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support cleaner transportation systems.
- Reduce fossil fuel dependence: Encourage greater use of biofuels to lower crude oil imports and improve long term national energy security through domestic renewable fuel production.
- Support farmers: Create additional income opportunities by using agricultural residues, crop waste, used cooking oil and non food biomass for biofuel production.
- Encourage innovation: Promote research and development in advanced biofuels, including second, third and fourth generation technologies with higher efficiency and lower environmental impact.
- Improve waste management: Convert agricultural waste, organic waste, animal waste and industrial residues into useful fuels instead of allowing open burning or landfill disposal.

What is Biofuel?
Biofuel is a renewable fuel produced from biomass such as plants, agricultural residues, animal waste, algae and organic materials within a short period. Types of Biofuels:
- First generation biofuels: Produced from food crops containing starch, sugar, or vegetable oils. Rice, wheat, sugarcane, sugar beet, corn and edible vegetable oils are common feedstocks.
- Second generation biofuels: Manufactured from non food biomass including agricultural residues, forest waste, industrial waste, lignocellulosic biomass and used cooking oil, reducing competition with food production.
- Third generation biofuels: Derived mainly from algae. These fuels can produce biodiesel and bioalcohol while offering higher productivity and better long term sustainability.
- Fourth generation biofuels: Produced using advanced technologies on non arable land without destroying biomass, making them more sustainable and environmentally friendly than earlier generations.

Examples of Biofuels
Biofuels include several renewable fuels prepared from biomass for transport, industrial and domestic energy needs with lower environmental impact.
- Bioethanol:
- Produced through fermentation of sugarcane, sugar beet, corn, cassava and biomass, then blended with petrol to prepare fuels such as E10, E15 and E85.
- Produced from sugarcane, corn, sugar beet, starch crops and biomass residues through fermentation before blending with petrol for transport fuels.
- Biodiesel:
- Produced by transesterification of vegetable oils, animal fats, tallow, acid oils and used cooking oil.
- It is widely considered nearly carbon neutral.
- Manufactured from vegetable oils, animal fats, recycled cooking oil and waste oils using transesterification for diesel engines.
- Bio CNG: Purified biogas containing mainly methane, produced from cattle dung, food waste, sewage and agricultural waste with energy properties similar to natural gas.
- Advanced biofuels: Produced from industrial waste, non food crops, agricultural residues, bio hydrogen, biomethanol and other advanced renewable feedstocks with lower carbon emissions.
- Drop in fuels: Liquid fuels prepared from biomass, industrial waste and agricultural residues that meet fuel quality standards and can be used in pure or blended forms.
World Biofuel Day Government Initiatives
India has introduced several policies and programmes to expand biofuel production, improve ethanol blending and promote cleaner transport fuels.
- National Policy on Biofuels: Approved in June 2018, the policy targets 20% ethanol blending and 5% biodiesel blending by 2030 while expanding feedstocks and encouraging advanced biofuels.
- Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP): Promotes blending ethanol with petrol. Procurement was expanded to include B heavy molasses and sugarcane juice, while higher prices encouraged greater ethanol production.
- GST reduction: The Government reduced GST on ethanol for blending from 18% to 5%, making ethanol blending more economically attractive.
- PM JI VAN Yojana: Supports commercial projects using advanced technologies for second generation ethanol production and strengthens research and innovation.
- GOBAR DHAN Scheme: Launched in 2018, it converts cattle dung and agricultural waste into compost and bio CNG, supporting village cleanliness and rural income.
- RUCO Initiative: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) launched Repurpose Used Cooking Oil (RUCO) to collect used cooking oil and convert it into biodiesel.
- Administrative reforms: Measures include simplified procurement by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), administrative pricing for ethanol, amendments to the Industries (Development and Regulation) Act 1951 and enabling lignocellulosic ethanol production.
- 2G Biorefineries: Oil Public Sector Undertakings are planning 12 second generation biorefineries to increase ethanol production and reduce agricultural residue burning, especially in northern India.
- National missions: Biofuel development complements Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan and Make in India by promoting clean energy, rural employment and domestic manufacturing.
World Biofuel Day Challenges
Despite rapid progress, biofuel production still faces several economic, technological and environmental challenges requiring continuous policy support.
- High water consumption: Producing ethanol from sugar requires around 2,860 litres of water for one litre of ethanol, creating pressure on water resources.
- Feedstock availability: Agricultural residues, waste materials and biomass supplies vary due to weather, seasonal production and market conditions, affecting production costs.
- Complex production process: Biofuel production involves pretreatment, hydrolysis, fermentation, distillation and purification, increasing technological complexity and investment requirements.
- Infrastructure limitations: Ethanol requires specialised storage, transportation and handling facilities because of its corrosive nature compared to conventional fuels.
- Vehicle compatibility: Higher biofuel blends may require modifications in engines and fuel systems for efficient and reliable performance.
- Lower energy density: Ethanol contains less energy than petrol, requiring larger quantities to deliver equivalent energy output during vehicle operation.
- Import dependence: India remains the third largest energy consumer after China and the United States. The country depends on imports for about 82.1% of crude oil and 44.4% of natural gas, highlighting the need for faster biofuel expansion.

World Biofuel Day highlights renewable energy, cleaner transport, sustainable agriculture and stronger energy security through increased adoption of environmentally friendly biofuels.
- Cleaner environment: Biofuels reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower dependence on fossil fuels and help manage agricultural, industrial and organic waste more effectively.
- Energy security: Increased domestic biofuel production reduces reliance on imported crude oil and strengthens long term national energy independence.
